Description of Issue

I was not able to use Roon at all this weekend, as it would not load. Instead, it provided the error message “there was an issue loading your library”.

I attempted to restore a backup, but when I selected the “roon backups” folder on my Windows 10 PC, it stated that the folder was empty.

Next, I attempted to restore Roon, by following the following instructions from your troubleshooting page (below). Aftering doing this, Roon would still not open, and gave me the same “There was an issue loading your library” error message.

Finally, I checked the health of all of my hard drives and RAM, all of which tested healthy.

Please help–

  • Exit out of Roon

  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location

  • Find the folder that says “Roon”

  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”

  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder

  • Restore a backup

Hey @Colin_Garvey,

Thanks for your patience while continue to work through each thread. Following up here, are you still having issues accessing your library?

Is your library stored on your windows 10 core? Do you have another computer or device you can temporarily set up as your core device to test?

I’ll be on standby for your reply.

Hi Ben. Yeah, it required every ounce of patience I possess to go 9 days without Roon.
Still no access to Roon at all, same error message. Library is stored my C drive, which I believe is my core. Unfortunately, I do not have another computer.

Hey @Colin_Garvey,

Thanks for the update. If you can, I would try to update to the latest Roon build (you can also do this by removing Roon and re-downloading it from the website, just make sure you have backup.)

With that, I wasn’t able to connect and enable diagnostics on your core, if you could please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?

Are you able to open Roon and access your settings? Do you have access to Tidal/Qobuz? If you can, I’d also like to see what your Roon Settings>Storage look like, if you could share a screenshot?

Logs have been uploaded…

To answer your questions, It’s not clear whether I have a backup at this time, as the Roon backup folder appears to be empty (see my first support request). So I assume it’s risky to delete/reinstall Roon. Correct?

To be clear, I am NOT able to open Roon at all, so no access to anything like settings/Tidal/etc.

More clarification: When I attempt to “restore a backup”, per Roon’s instructions, and find the Roon backup on my PC, it states “there was an error retrieving the backup listing (InvalidRoot). Please check the backup folder and try again.”

Hey @Colin_Garvey,

After reviewing your logs (thanks again for sending them over) we were able to discover low-level corruption in your database. Specifically:

03/30 15:45:30 Error: [broker/database] corruption detected: Invalid argument: not an sstable (bad magic number)

From your OP, you had already refreshed your database, which should have improved things, and so removing and reinstalling a fresh version of Roon wouldn’t make a difference.

Depending on how long the corruption existed, there is a small chance previous backups could also be corrupt. Do you by chance have any backups saved elsewhere that may predate when your issues started to pop up?

I don’t have any additional backups that I’m aware of, unless Roon instructed me to make another one.
How do I proceed, so that I can use Roon again. Please tell me I’ve not lost all of my Roon data from the past 4 years…

Hey @Colin_Garvey,

Unfortunately, this will depend on if you’re able to locate and restore from a backup or not. If possible, could you please send us one of your backups for analysis? Steps to follow below:

  1. Zip up your RoonBackups folder (right-click it and select “Compress…”):
  2. Submit the .zip file to us through our Database Corruption Issues portal

I see that your windows core device was able to update to the latest Roon build, so that’s a good sign. I’ll be on standby for your reply. :+1:

2 sets of files have been uploaded. If you find that these files are not helpful/etc, can you explain how this db corruption issue occurred? Is there some sort of bug with Roon’s software, given that nothing is wrong with my PC, my hard drives, my RAM, or anything else?

I’m super bummed out if this doesnt work.

Hey @Colin_Garvey,

Thanks for sending those over. Our team will take a closer to see what can be done, and I’ll follow up as soon as I can.

To put it simply, database corruption means that the records Roon is reading from your database are different from what was originally written. This isn’t common and can happen for a number of reasons, like failing hard drives or an unstable power source (frequent outages, hard power cuts, etc).

In some cases, corrupt database records can go completely undetected. And it’s only when we release an update that requires Roon to re-scan every record that the corruption shows itself.

These updates don’t happen frequently, which increases the risk of data loss. For example, if you only have a few weeks of backups, the chances that you have a usable backup drop significantly if the “latent” corruption isn’t detected for many months.

Starting with Build 880, Roon detects database corruption “on the fly”. So if corruption is detected during a backup or during normal use of Roon, you’ll be immediately prompted to restore from a backup.

If you’re not having any luck with your oldest backup (or any of your backups in this case,) then the only alternative is to start with a fresh database.

And rightfully so, it’s a frustrating position to be in. I empathize with you and hope our QA team can potentially prevent you from having to start from scratch.

I’ll be in touch as soon as I can with more information. :+1:

Hey @Colin_Garvey,

Unfortunately, there weren’t any files to extract from the folders you sent over. As a next step:

  • Can we get a screenshot of your backup folder structure from via file explorer? Here is a test example, but from my MacBook:

  • Can you try to manually search for files with _roon_backup_root_ on your computer?

I’m wondering if perhaps you have backups saved to a different location.

I am not able to find any other _roon_backup_root files/folders. Ugh.
I uploaded a screenshot to the db corruption folder…

Hey @Colin_Garvey,

I see from the screenshot that you may only be searching in your D drive labeled ‘Music’. Is there a possibility you could have saved backups to other locations/drives on your PC? This would have had to be set up manually, though, and not something Roon does automatically.

I wish there were additional things we could do to help in this situation, but without any backups available you may have to follow through with using the fresh database you have running.

That said, I would be sure to set up a new backup folder as well as auto-schedule backups to save you from any headaches in the future.

Hey there. Could you please clarify what you’d like me to do next? Are you asking me to uninstall Roon, wipe everything off my system, then reinstall from scratch, with all of my thousands of saved albums and playlists gone forever?

I have no idea about the “fresh db” that you mention. All I know is that in its current state, Roon will not start up, and is unusable…Please tell me how to proceed, and would appreciate it if you could be specific. We’ve been back and forth on this for almost 3 weeks–

My apologies @Colin_Garvey, I see that your windows 10 core was online recently, and so I was under the impression you had Roon up and running on a new database.

What happens if you don’t try to restore a backup? Are you able to login and access Roon? What specifically happens when you try to open Roon in your current state?

I’m sorry it’s taken this long, but unfortunately, your issue isn’t an easy one to pin down.

Another option would be to try downloading and running the headless version of Roon, RoonServer, and use a mobile device like a phone or tablet as a remote to navigate around Roon. Here is more:

If I don’t attempt to restore a backup, then I’m stuck. I’m not able to login and access Roon. Opening Roon in current state takes me directly to the “there was an issue loading your library” error page, with a “restore a backup” button.

Are you instructing me to install Roon Server? If so, please provide specific instructions on where/how to do this. I could not find a Roonserver download link for Windows, all I could find was your Downloads - Roon Labs page, which makes no mention of roonserver.

PLEASE get back to me today. Much appreciated.

Hey @Colin_Garvey,

Got it. Thanks for the status update. To confirm, you’re not able to access the login screen at all, or you attempt to login but it fails?

Before testing out installing Roon Server, lets please do a re-refresh of your database and raatserver:

  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon” and “RAATServer”
  • Rename “Roon” to “Roon_old” and “RAATServer” to “RAATServer_old”
  • Reinstall Roon from our Downloads Page

If you still hit a wall, follow the directions here to test out running Roon Server:

https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/faq-how-do-i-move-my-library-over-to-roonserver-how-do-i-run-headless#Windows:~:text=for%20this%20account.-,Migrating%20to%20Roon%20Server,-If%20you%20would
This article should have everything you need to give this a go. :+1:

I was able to get Roon reinstalled with your instructions, without doing the roon server option.
I’m not able to see any of my saved playlists, tags, radio stations, etc. It essentially appears as if I’m starting from scratch, and lost 6 years of stuff. Is that accurate? Is everything gone?

Hey @Colin_Garvey,

I’m glad to hear you were able to get Roon back up and running. If you don’t have any available backups to restore from, then unfortunately you may have to start fresh.
