Tidal is loading slowly, this could suggest a networking or hardware issue

I recently moved my core from my Nucleus+ with 32GB ram due to severe issues playing music with connection issue, roon freezing and crashing.

After setting up Roon on my Mac Mini, Roon ran far more smoothly than on the Nucleus.

Now after a few weeks Iā€™m experiencing similar issues and receiving error messages ā€œLoading slowly, networking problems check connectivityā€ and ā€œWaiting for your Roon serverā€. Songs stop and start, sometimes the song stops before the end of the song and the next song starts, sometimes Roon loses connection with the selected speakers and sometimes Roon crashes. This happens with Tidal and my own audio files. Iā€™ve tried rebooting Roon and my modem, sometimes this helps a little, sometimes not. I notice that my hard disc is nearly full, currently I only have 3.93 GB available, would this cause problems with Roon?

Probably so. 1TB = 1000gb. 1000 - 3.93 = 996.07
996.07 / 1000 = 99.6 percent full.

Of course, I donā€™t know if Roon writes to your drive during playback. Maybe not.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your response, do you know how much free disk space Roon needs and does it need more for a large library like mine?

I just realized you said Mac Mini which I assume means it has only one drive. If thatā€™s the case then 99.6 percent full would definitely be a problem because the operating system and everything else running on the computer would need to do read/write and need some headroom.

Maybe you need a Roon Nucleus Titan with that large library. Of course, you could try a larger drive and see what happens.

I just deleted a few files and now I have 128 GB free on the internal SSD and Iā€™ve got my music library on an external drive.

Iā€™d love a Titan, unfortunately I canā€™t spend that sort of cash at present. especially with the current Aussie dollar exchange rate.

Iā€™ve been looking for cheap Dell i7 Optiplex with 64GB ram for my Roon core.

The drive being that full is never good. It is particularly bad for SSDs and will kill them more quickly than otherwise.

The ā€œloading slowlyā€ problem you are experiencing may only be a network throughput problem.

On the other hand, 732,656 tracks is at the upper end of library sizes and the Nucleus problems may well have been caused by this. I wish people would heed the public advice on specifications.

I know very little when compared to you guys
But I tell you, this Tidal running slow issue, there sems to be new ā€œreasonā€ for it happening every time someone reports it.

In was experiencing it a lot, but once I changed the MQA settings, it almost never does it anymore.

Do you think that could just be coincidental?

There may well be other cases as well, but I think I read most posts and AFAICT eventually it is usually a network problem. (Often preceded by the user saying this canā€™t be, but then it turns out to be broken cable, faulty switch, or whatever, anyway).

Anyway, if using a server machine that is woefully underpowered for the library size, one shouldnā€™t be surprised if there are problems.

Hi @Paul_Elliott,
Thanks for writing in to ask about this.

Was there any performance improvement after doing this?

Thanks Daniel,

It doesnā€™t seem quite as bad, Iā€™m playing a local file album now and getting a ā€˜file loading slowly, hardware issueā€™ and ā€˜waiting for your Roon serverā€™ error messages.

Iā€™ve also replaced the Ethernet cable and plugged it directly into the router.

Iā€™m aware that some people in the Roon community say that running a large library like mine in Roon isnā€™t suitable for purpose. I used to own a record shop, I present a weekly radio program and Iā€™ve been a record collector since the early 1960ā€™s. I decided to replicate my record collection digitally and sell my vinyl many years ago. Roon is the closest I can get to mirroring the joy I received from playing my record collection. When it works I love Roon and I donā€™t appreciate being told that I shouldnā€™t have a large library like mine. When it works properly, a large library gives Roonā€™s ability to link to other artists and albums more scope. I would really like Roon to work perfectly with my music collection and the hardware resources I have. I can upgrade modestly, but unfortunately Iā€™m unable to throw large amounts of money buying the latest and best hardware. Rant over.

Hi @Paul_Elliott,
We have reproduced an issue in house that has similar log traces to your logs. Do you see the numbers fluctuate in the storage locations like in this photo?

Hi @daniel ,

Roon was working well for a couple of hours this morning, then it started stopping playback.
Hereā€™s 2 screenshots taken 2 minutes between them, the first is just after playback stopped and the other is when it started again.

Hey @Paul_Elliott,

Thanks for the additional information! Our team will gladly take a closer look into this for you, but we do also want to mention that with such an impressive library of 700k+ tracks, you may be pushing the limits of what most audio software can handle, including Roon. While weā€™ll do our best to assist, we canā€™t always guarantee perfect functionality in this case. Thank you for your understanding!

Hi, thanks.

Iā€™d really like to know if I got a new powerful computer with 64gb of memory would my Roon experience be greatly improved.

Or because of the limitations of the software would I be wasting my money?

Hi @Paul_Elliott,

If youā€™re looking for hardware suggestions, Iā€™d suggest opening a thread in the Roon Software Discussion category, as weā€™re only able to assist with technical issues at this time.

If you disable your local library, does Tidal load faster?

Hi Benjamin,

I just disabled my music library and Tidal tracks play almost instantly. That was the other day, today every few songs thereā€™s a second of silence before the track continues.

Hey @Paul_Elliott,

Unfortunately, this does point to your library being the primary area behind the dip in performance. The only suggestion I can offer would be to test out creating a smaller local library to see what the threshold is for optimal performance and library size.

Can you be a bit more specific? Which zone were you playing to? Could you share a specific track name? We examined a fresh diagnostic report, but donā€™t see anything relating to your comment above. Let me know!

This morning I played the Nail album by Scraping foetus off the wheel. Every track played well until near the end of the 4th track Pigswill when it cut off for a second. It was playing through the grouped zone Unity Atom / Bluesound.

Then about 30 minutes later near the end of ninth track Fourth of July by David Francey on the waking hour album the sound cuts off for a second.

9.58 AM Australia time near the end of Andrea Dworkinā€™s Knees by Luke Haines off Setting the dogs on the post punk postman sound cuts off for a second about a minute before the end of the song and starts again.
