Does the issue happen with local library music, streaming service music, or both?
· *Both streaming and local* *library* music are affected.
Do you encounter any playback errors with the "System Output" Zone?
· The System Output has the same problem as my other Zone.
Do you have a complex network setup?
· Both the device and RoonServer are connecting to a *single router*
Please try rebooting your router.
· No, I'm still having trouble
Do you have an approximate timestamp of when the issue last occurred?
· Probably about an hour ago. Roughly June 24, 2026 noon ET.
What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?
· Windows PC. Every question you ask makes me want to abandon this support request. At this point there is more benefit to avoiding having to be a roon customer.
Describe the issue
I have roon installed on my windows PC with it acting as the roon server. Whenever I try to play audio via my system output, either local files or streaming via Qobuz, I get a "too many failures" error. The error is neither helpful or actionable so I have no idea what's going on. Because roon is not working I cancelled my subscription so I don't get billed, but that cancelled my free trial so I am unable to trouble shoot further. Hopefully you can understand why I would consider this one of the worst onboarding experiences I've ever had in my life. I can't imagine how many customers you've lost if it's this difficult to become one. Appreciate your help but at this point providing this info more for your benefit than mine as I've lost any hope or excitement I had in using roon. Absolutely awful experience.
Describe your network setup
My PC connects wirelessly to my router/modem (single device). Everything else regarding streaming, games, devices, etc. works fine within my home. I've never had an issue until I used Roon.
Thank you for reaching out, and we are sorry for the frustrating experience.
The “too many failures” error on System Output typically happens for one of two reasons: either another application is holding exclusive control of your audio device, or there is a mismatch between Roon’s output settings and what your sound card supports.
Could you please try the following:
Close all other audio applications - Spotify, browsers, media players, anything that uses sound - then try playing again
Check exclusive mode - go to Windows Sound Settings → your output device → Properties → Advanced and uncheck “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device”
In Roon, go to Settings → Audio, find your System Output zone, click the gear icon and under Device Setup try changing the channel mapping.
Also, regarding your subscription - we are involving our @accounts team to make sure that you have a seamless experience while we would be able to solve this.
We were able to review a fresh Roon Server diagniostc report, and see the PC connects to the router over Wi-Fi, and the issue symptom is repeated timeouts fetching audio data from Qobuz’s Akamai CDN. This seems to be a network reliability/throughput problem between your Roon Server/PC and the internet, dropped packets, weak Wi-Fi, or something throttling/interrupting the connection (VPN, firewall, security suite, or ISP).
Lets see if any of the following help:
Temporarily wire the PC to the router via Ethernet and retest if failures vanish, it confirms Wi-Fi as the source.
Disable any VPN, proxy, or third-party firewall/antivirus web-filtering and retest, these commonly interrupt CDN streams mid-download.
Test a basic large-file download or speed test on that PC to confirm raw connectivity is stable.
We did see a RAATServer crash specifically, a full reinstall of RoonServer would refresh the bundled audio engine.
Appreciate your prompt reply, but I don’t think Roon is going to work for me. I was able to play songs briefly but now I’m getting failures again. I use my internet for work and competitive gaming without any VPN and have never had any issues, just with Roon.
What device are you connecting via System Output? Since you mention gaming, if it is a headset, it might only be able to accept multichannel audio, if this is the case, please right-click the zone, open Device Setup, scroll down to Advanced (and then lower), set channel layout to 5.1/7.1 and enable Send Stereo as 5.1/7.1:
Just checking in on this. Were you able to try the System Output change we mentioned, specifically setting the zone to 5.1 or 7.1 in Device Setup and turning on Send Stereo as 5.1/7.1 if you’re using a headset or another multichannel device? Let us know what you see when possible, thanks!
