Describe the issue

Roon was working fine using an AudioQuest Dragonfly Cobalt DAC a coupla days ago. Now I am unable to play any music at all. When I start play in roon, I get the "too many failures" error, and I can never get music to play. Aside from Windows daily antivirus updates and a Lenovo Driver update yesterday, after the "too many failures" was already a problem, I haven't messed with roon settings. It WAS working fine.

Describe your network setup

I don't know all of this info. I live in a shared residence. The landlord has control of the router and ancillary equipment. I do know that my WiFi signal comes directly from the main router on the ground floor, where I live.

OK. Nailed down the problem. With my current Windows setup possibly coming into the picture, what I discovered is that roon was choosing my AudioQuest DAC as the output zone. It didn’t work, which is now a curiosity, but a non-issue. When I had the DAC plugged into the laptop and chose System Output, voila! I was back to normal roon operation. Now, if I could just get better internet speed, but I don’t have control of the router where I live.

Hello @michael.durio,

Glad you got it working again!

Regarding the Dragonfly Cobalt not working as a separate Roon zone — this is likely related to the Lenovo driver update that ran recently. USB audio driver conflicts on Windows can prevent Roon from claiming the device as a dedicated zone even though it works fine as System Output.

If you would like to get the Dragonfly working as its own zone again, try the following: go to Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers, find the AudioQuest Dragonfly, right-click → Uninstall device (check “Delete the driver software” if the option appears), unplug and replug the DAC, and let Windows reinstall the driver fresh.

Feel free to reach out if the issue persists.
