Description Of Issue
Over the last few weeks tracks now and again skip, the frequency is going up. I can’t think of an explanation

Hi @Bluebeat,

Have you noticed any patterns at all? Does any specific content seem to skip more often (certain file types, sample rates, or local vs. TIDAL/Qobuz)?

Have you played to any other endpoints? Do you experience the same thing if so?

Hi @dylan,

I took some time to evaluate further what is going on.

Skipping occurs with all kind of file types. In my case they’re almost without exception FLACs, and ranging from 16/44 tot 24/192. Qobuz and TIDAL streams are affected. I’m not so sure about local files, which are stored on my NAS. The last few weeks the skipping didn’t involve those, as far as I can tell. Skipping seems to occur more often when radio is picking tracks. When there’s skipping most of the time the track skips a few times in a row. I only use one endpoint regularly.

My hunch is my modem might be to blame, which is rather old. I’m investigating that now, with my ISP. For starters I did a full reset of the modem today.

I’ll keep you informed, and I’ll contact you if and when the skipping re-occurs.

If you think something else might cause this behaviour, please let me know.

Cheers,

Marc

I used to get this sort of behaviour when I had a different WiFi setup and told me my hardware needed booting. Sounds like a network issue so you are on the right path I think.

Thanks for your input, Ged!

Hi @Bluebeat,

It does sound like the internet could be cutting out, a few suggestions while you look into the modem issues:

  1. Update your DNS servers on the router to use Cloudflare DNS, Quad9 or Google DNS, this can help general network stability.

  2. I would confirm if multiple endpoints exhibit the same issue around the same time, this would further suggest a general network disconnect is going on if multiple devices are dropping at the same time.

  3. You can try a different Core machine connected in the same way as the current Core If another Core is exhibiting the same issue, that suggests the issue is occurring earlier in the chain.

Do let us know how the modem troubleshooting goes!

@noris @dylan
Another set of skips, despite of the reset of the modem earlier today. Local file this time. FLAC 24/96. Maybe there’s another problem. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Marc

Hi @Bluebeat,

Were you able to confirm any of my previous questions?

  1. Have you changed your DNS?
  2. Did the issue occur on multiple endpoints or just one?
  3. Have you tried a different Roon Core yet?

HI @noris,

Haven’t had the time to try your suggestions at first. There was no need too. Skipping didn’t occur for a month or so after rebooting not only the modem, but also router, core and endpoint.

A few days ago, though, the problem was back, quite severly too. So I changed my router settings to Cloudflare. Roon was immediately snappier. No skipping until now. It’s only been a few days, so nothing is definitive but I like what Cloudflare does. So far so good.

I think you can close this thread, if you want. If the skipping re-occurs I’ll open a new ticket.

Cheers,

Marc
