I am migrating from a Mac M1 Pro to Nucleus One. I transferred all the music files to the Internal Storage on the Nucleus One. Can I also transfer the latest backup to the internal storage if I create an extra folder for the backup? I'm connecting with the Nucleus One using file sharing on the network as a mounted drive. I have access to both "storage" and "InternalStorage" folders.
It’s not recommended to do backups on the internal storage as the Nucleus “sees” the entire drive.
This could cause issues with the DB (it would see the backup as tracks and they would show up in roon as doubles, and it would grow to a very large file that could be corrupted etc).
Thanks for mentioning this. I am not planning on doing backups on the internal storage drive in the Nucleus One. It would be just for the initial start up. I will back up on the Mac M1 Pro which in turn backs up every night to both to a separate drive and to an off site NAS.
I asked this question because I haven’t signed into the Nucleus One, so I don’t know if I could reach the Mac on the network and restore from the current backup location.
Have a read of this Help article - it’s for accessing shared folders on a Mac as Watched Folders, but the principle is the same for accessing shared folders that hold Roon Backups…
Do not attempt to use the Internal Storage drive even temporarily as a means to transfer Backups. You are inviting yourself into a world of pain if you do.
In addition, you don’t “sign into your Nucleus One” on first startup, you click the “restore a backup” link on the Login screen, and you should be able to access the shared Backup folder on the Mac from there. See:
I migrated to the Nucleus One, using an attached USB 16G thumb drive and it is currently updating. My question now is disabling the previous Roon server database. I’ve turned off Roon on my Mac M1 where the previous server was running. When I look in my library, in addition to the RoonServer folder containing a database, there are folders named Roon, RoonGoer, RoonMounts, all containing a subfolder named Database. Do I rename ALL of the “Database” in all of these folders, or is the important one in the RoonServer folder. The Mac OS is Sonoma 14.6.1.
Thanks,David
I would keep your Roon server on your Mac M1. There is no reason not to and you might want to use it sometime. All you do is unauthorize it when your authorize the Nucleus One and vice versa.
One reason to keep it is in case you want to take Roon with you when you travel, etc.
Hi JIm, I unauthorized the Roon Server, and also removed it from the “start at login” option. I did rename the database in the RoonServer folder to “database-old” Right now everything seems to be working fine. The major change is connecting the Nucleus One directly to the DAC via USB, eliminating connecting through BlueSound via the network. The only “downside” is having to swap out the USB thumb drive when I need to add a CD to the library.
If you think you want to keep your old Roon server for any reason (I would), you should restore your latest backup to it. By renaming it, you have lost all the Roon database information on the old server.
Hi bearFNF, The thumb drive is for backups. The other USB connects directly to the DAC input of the pre-amp. My main computer is a Macbook Pro M1, which does not contain a CD drive. I have an external drive that connects directly to the USB in the Nucleus One for importing new CD’s. I originally used the network to load all the existing CD’s and other music files into the internal storage on the Nucleus One.
