Have a good week end ![]()
After hundreds of sudo commands, checks, internet navigations, documents, etc … I decided to start a new fresh Ubuntu 14.04 LTS installation.
I disconnect mac mini and Amanero (no monitor, kkremote from iMac access), and connect it to TV monitor (kkremote cannot be used to install Ubuntu). Before to start installation I log in to Ubuntu and launch setting/sound application. …
no words
PS HQ desktop still not working. I am going to perform a flash installation of Ubuntu in order to start from a clean situation
Problem is kkremote. If I log in by keyboard directly connected to the macmini connected via hdmi to a monitor, everything works fine. HD desktop player works too.
Same installation, no hdmi, no monitor, login via network with kkremote, Dummy output (no audio device listed in setting.
I don’t really ever try to use any remote desktops with Linux. So I cannot comment about such cases. But many times such try to mess with audio devices, like Windows Remote Desktop too. That’s why I use VNC with Windows instead, since it doesn’t try to mess with audio. It could work with Linux too, but I don’t know.
HQPlayer Desktop is intended for local configuration cases. But it also works fine launched through ssh X11 forwarding if your remote supports X11. Of course with both Desktop and Embedded products, the actual playback control is remote controlled anyway, from HQPlayer Client or similar, either within the same machine of from a remote network entity.
HQPlayer Embedded is intended for headless Ubuntu Server 24.04 and similar cases where it runs as a service and is managed through the web interface.
So this could be point of consideration on product selection.
Yes, as it is supposed to…
HQPlayer support practically starts at the .1 release. So for example usually not yet at initial 24.04.0 release, but only at 24.04.1 which is the point where 22.04 can be upgraded to 24.04.
Thank you Jussi. I have not experience with HQ player suite. I am afraid to start a new installation with server/embedded release, now that seems everything working except kkremote/RDP access. But I understand from your writing that embedded version seems to be the right choice in my case.
Could you please confirm it to me?
With respect to Desktop version installation is much more difficult and complex or, more or less, is the same?
Thanks again.
A.
Have you tried VNC?
If your intention is to run a headless server on Linux, then Embedded is designed for that purpose.
If you don’t need Nvidia GPU offload, then just booting up HQPlayer OS image from USB memory stick is very easy. No installation needed and it is plug-and-play. Cannot get much simpler than that.
If you are familiar working on Linux command line, installing Embedded is not much different from Desktop installation. There is only one additional dependency package to install before installing the hqplayerd package. You can try installing it on Ubuntu Desktop first to avoid OS reinstall just for testing. While booting up HQPlayer OS doesn’t touch your existing OS installations at all.
RealVNC personal version worked great for me when I was running HQPlayer Desktop on Ubuntu.
Unfortunately HQ player desktop needs more cpu performance than mac mini 2011 (i5 x 4).
It depends on what you want to do. I believe it would work fine at least to DSD256 with default settings? And I’d expect no challenges at all with most PCM output settings.
I’ve had good results with x11vnc, but I’m running Linux mint 22.2. I believe it works with Ubuntu 24.
