Well Done! on how Roon handles multiple versions of an album. Really, it’s like you guys designed the model for how I happen to label my albums.
For example, I’ve been ripping CD/BD/DVD/DVD-A discs from the newly remastered released from Steven Wilson (e.g. Jethro Tull, Yes, King Crimson). I’ve been spending like a drunken sailor…
I label the alternate versions with something like: “[2015 Steven Wilson] (BD)” or “[Flat Transfer]” or “[Deluxe Edition] (SACD)”, where the part in brackets is the date plus mastering/mixing engineer or special edition, followed by a label noting physical media (e.g. SACD, SHM-CD, BD, DVD, DVD-A, whatever). Yes, I am OCD, but I am guess that’s the typical Roon user.
To my astonishment, Roon “strips” these annotation from the album title and displays them neatly on the bottom of the album thumbnail, along with the format.
I also love how you can choose alternate versions and make one or another the primary version, noting the little “Other Versions” button near the bottom of the album banner.
Wow…
Just wanted to say ‘Thanks!’ to the forward-thinking UI designer that created that little Easter egg.
A lot of things have been done right and it’s very impressive. Equally impressive is the commitment to continuing development. Expanding the reach of Roon with the RAAT SDK, RoonSpeakers, Squeezebox and Raspberry Pi support and Linux RoonServer have been priorities, but the Roon devs have made it clear they are by no means finished with metadata editing etc.
UI improvements are also bubbling through, and the devs listen carefully to user’s views about UI. Your posts about playback and review text handling reflect concerns others have raised. The latter has been changed and will be released shortly. I’m not aware of any announced changes to playback UI, but constructive suggestions have changed things in the past (Play From Here was added about two months ago after user feedback).
So please keep the suggestions and requests flowing. I’m sure the devs also enjoy reading user’s positive experiences so I hope they see this post
