· I am stuck trying to install ROCK on a MSI NUC13MQG. In configuring the NUC, I could not enter the BIOS using either the f2 or f10 keys, so used the Windows Advanced settings instead. Managed to set up BIOS in accordance with the guidance. However, when I plugged in the USB stick containing the ROCK flash and restarted the NUC, I could not interrupt booting from the hard drive - neither the f2 or f10 or keys worked (tried repeatedly). I was wondering if I should change the BIOS to have usb book as the priority, but the guidance says one would need to change this later and I am not confident I could do this once windows has been deleted from the hard drive. Any words of advice?
Some BIOS’s use the ‘DEL’ key to access the BIOS settings.
On some BIOS’s, F12 brings up a boot menu from which you can select the boot device.
I don’t know whether or not these key functions apply to the MSI NUC.
Edit: After an internet search, I believe that both of these startup key apply to MSI desktop systems and so are likely to also apply to the NUC13MQG as well.
You need a keyboard / mouse with driver support during BIOS / UEFI setup. Wired USB keyboards mostly work, a wireless one with USB dongle that registers itself as USB keyboard should work too. What are you trying to use?
It sounds like the NUC is booting past the USB installer before you can get into the firmware menu. On MSI systems, the boot and BIOS keys can vary a bit, and fast boot can make them harder to catch.
Before you reinstall Windows or change the boot order permanently, I’d try these two things, as others have already mentioned:
Use the DEL key to enter BIOS setup, and F12 for the one-time boot menu. Tap the key repeatedly as soon as you power the unit on, rather than holding it down.
If you can still get into Windows, disable fast boot there first, then shut the machine all the way down and try again with the USB stick inserted.
If the USB installer still will not appear in the boot menu, let us know if the MSI splash screen ever appears before Windows starts loading. That will help us narrow down whether this is timing, firmware, or USB detection behavior.
Let us know what you see after another try, and we can take it from there.
It was the Del button - everything went smoothly thereafter.
Have new server up and running - no lags.
Only issue (there is always an issue) is that the (new) roon rock does not show up on my windows pc. Somehow I had mapped the previous server but the pc just won’t play ball. My PC had the various settings amended that “the internet” recommends to enable network sharing but keep getting nowhere - see photo attached.
Is this a common issue with Windows?
I have a Mac as well and can see the server through this, but as I use the PC to rip CDs to the hard drive attached to the room rock I really need to be able to access it from the PC.
Thanks for reaching out. Based on your description, it looks like Windows is blocking access to the Nucleus/ROCK internal storage due to its security settings regarding “Guest” access.
This is a common behavior in recent Windows updates (10/11), where the system automatically blocks network shares that don’t require a password. Since Nucleus is designed to be accessible without a password for convenience, Windows essentially puts up a barrier.

Hi Vadim, after lots of trial and error I have a (currently) working fix. I used the roon rock’s fixed IP address to map the drive \\[RockIPaddress]\data and that seems to be stable. I retried \\roon\data and it does not work but guess I should be happy to have a solution. Thanks for your help.
