Unable to access local files and tags after update on new Mac Mini (ref#MFNT3W)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Music won’t play or issues with my library

Music won’t play or issues with my library

· Local files won't import or appear

Tell us what's going on

· Very frustrating. I just bought a new Mac mini since my 2012 version is outdated with your new update. I backed up the system and copied everything over to the new Mac. When I went to update to the latest version is where everything went south. I cannot access any of my local files in the "Music" folder, all my "tags" seem to have gone "unavailable" basically anything that I saved from Qubuz says "unavailable". Please help I don't get it. I restored 2.6.4 and everything is back to normal. I bought this new machine to run your latest but something is preventing this.

Tell us about your home network

· Eero Pro 6 is my main network but the Mac mini is connected to the Eero's via Ethernet.

Hello @Mark_Allen,

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

The reason everything works on 2.64 but fails on the latest version after a restore is simple: when you move a database to a new Mac, Roon sees the new hardware as a “different” environment. While it restores your settings, it hasn’t yet re-established the storage paths.

You do not need to stay on 2.64. Please try the following steps to get your new Mac Mini running perfectly on the latest version:

1. Re-link your Storage Paths

Even though you copied your music files over, the new Mac Mini has a different internal path (e.g., the name of the hard drive might be slightly different).

  • Once updated to the latest version, go to Settings > Storage.
  • You will likely see your folder marked as “Unavailable.”
  • Click the three dots (⋮) next to the folder and select Edit.
  • Re-select the folder from your new Mac Mini’s drive. This forces Roon to re-scan the file paths and verify that it has permission to access the files under the new macOS security settings.

2. Re-authenticate Qobuz

When you restore a database to a new machine, the security tokens for streaming services often need a manual refresh to ensure they are tied to the new device ID.

  • Go to Settings > Services.
  • Click Edit next to Qobuz.
  • Click Logout.
  • Restart Roon, then go back to Settings > Services and log in again. This will refresh your credentials and should bring your “unavailable” Qobuz albums back online.

3. macOS Security Permissions (Crucial)

With the new macOS, security permissions are stricter. Ensure Roon has full access:

  • Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access.
  • Make sure Roon (and RoonServer if present) is toggled ON in the list. If it isn’t there, click the plus (+) button and add it manually.
  • Restart Roon once this is set.

Please try these steps, and you should find your library and tags fully available on the latest version. Let us know if any of these specific folders remain “unavailable” after re-linking them!

Ok, I’ll try this. I"m pretty sure I tried these steps yesterday. If this works, great! If not I’ll continue to start over “clean” with 2.6.6 and manually rebuild my tags/favorite’s etc.

I’ve tried these steps. With multiple logging out of Qobuz and disabling/enabling storage, restarting Roon and/or my computer it seems to be working. I see all my files which is great. However after seeing all my files then I decided to Restart Roon. When I started back up, all my files weren’t showing again. Not sure what’s going on but I’ll redo my steps then immediately do a backup. I won’t Restart Roon next time for at least 24 hours.

I’m not sure if something is stuck, I see the “spinner” icon and it says "Adding music to library " but the numbers haven’t changed in hours. It just keeps spinning like it’s hung. I’ll continue to let it run..

How long will I continue to see this? It hasn’t changed for at least 8 hours.

@vadim, @support,

Nothing seems to work but to revert back to 2.64 which works flawlessly for me. I really want to update to the latest version but I can’t get rid of the message above (seems to be coming from Qobuz), I’m missing 3-4 Albums from my “Music” default folder and worst of all it seems like most of my Qubuz albums/tracks I’ve downloaded and marked as favorites keep saying “Unavailable”.

An example is an album has 10 tracks, 9 of them are fine but the one with the heart is “Unavailable”. Please help.

Hi @Mark_Allen,

Thank you for your patience, and I’m sorry this has been such a frustrating experience.

The stuck “Adding music to library” spinner combined with individual tracks showing as “Unavailable” after a restart strongly suggests that the database has some stale or orphaned entries that are preventing a clean import. Let’s address this directly.

Step 1: Force a Library Cleanup
Go to Settings > Library > Library Maintenance and run Clean Up Library. This removes orphaned entries from your database that no longer point to valid files and often resolves the stuck spinner issue.

Step 2: Force a full re-scan of your storage
After the cleanup, go to Settings > Storage, click the three dots (⋮) next to your Music folder, and select Force Re-scan. Let it complete fully before restarting.

Step 3: For the individual Qobuz “Unavailable” tracks
This is typically caused by a mismatch between the local downloaded copy and the streaming version in your database. For each affected album, try:

  • Right-click the album > Edit > Re-identify Album
  • Or remove it from your library and re-add it from Qobuz

Step 4: Do not restart Roon mid-scan
As you noticed, restarting during an active import interrupts the process and leaves the database in an inconsistent state. Let the scan fully complete first.

If after these steps the spinner is still stuck after a few hours, please send us a set of logs so we can dig into what exactly is blocking the import:

We want to get you fully onto the latest version — let’s get there together!

I’ve tried all your suggestions but still nothing. The only good thing is at least the “spinner” isn’t spinning for days. If you need the logs please let me know which logs you’d like me to upload.

Hey @Mark_Allen,

Thanks for the reply! From a fresh Roon Server diagnostic report, it looks like the logs from today show the library is actually stable, 7,463 tracks, 684 albums, 16 tags, Qobuz connected and syncing cleanly.

It is worth noting that we do see the following:

[storage] [directory] Failed to extract audio format

4 specific files flagged repeatedly:

HDtracks/Beyonce/Dangerously In Love/06 Me, Myself And I.m4a — UnsupportedFormat
iTunes/.../Compilations/Dangerously In Love/06 Me, Myself And I.m4a — UnsupportedFormat
iTunes/.../Mark Allen_s iPhone/Voice Memos/2_3_12, 12_13 PM.m4a — CorruptFile
iTunes/.../Unknown Artist/Unknown Album/From_18775448184_201816031901.wav — UnsupportedFormat

Let me know if removing these files from your Roon watched folder helps. If it doesn’t, see if the following helps:

  • Back up your current Roon database first: go to Settings > Backups > Backup Now
  • Then, Go to Settings > Library and click Clean Up Library, let it complete fully
  • Then go to Settings > Storage and remove the Music Folder entry entirely, then re-add it fresh. This forces Roon to build the local library from what's actually on disk rather than from migrated records
  • Let the full rescan complete (do not restart during this, it takes ~10–15 minutes for your library size)
We’ll be monitoring for your reply, thank you! 🙏

Thanks.

I’ve cleared out those 4 files which is great but as of right now I see no Qobuz content whatsoever in my library/Music folder. I tried to cleanup all my music and delete some tracks that I never listen to it would be nice to have Qobuz back working. Most of my tags are Qobuz the rest I can recreate.

I’ll just let it sit where it’s at and hopefully something is happening in the background. All tags that have Qobuz data are empty right now.

I can always start of with an old backup and the previous version of Roon and try the whole process over again, but I’d rather go through the fire…

Right now I’m going to try adding my fav Qobuz albums manually.

As I mentioned I added back in all my favorite Albums and tracks from Qobuz manually and not thinking about the tags. Everything seemed fine but now I still have 16 tracks spinning endlessly. Any idea which ones from Qobuz are causing this endless spinning?
