Unable to Add Music Folder from PC to Roon Rock via Network Share or USB (ref#9AFW5H)

How can we help?

· I'm having trouble adding music to my library

Describe the issue

I have recently set up Roon Rock on an Intel NUC. Previously I had Roon Set up on my PC. My music files are on my PC. I would like Roon to watch my current Music folder on my PC. The NUC is near my desktop PC so I can connect by USB if necessary. I have otherwise completed the Roon Rock setup according to the instructions on the Roon website. I have been able to access Roon Rock on my local network and connect to ROCK within Roon. However, I am not able to add the Music folder on my PC to the Roon Rock server. Plugging in the USB does not bring up any folders on my PC. I tried adding a network share but was unsuccessful. When trying to share the Music folder in Windows I receive an error "Your folder can't be shared." However, the Music folder appears under the Network tab in Windows file explorer, and I am able to see a location of a "network path" under the sharing tab. When I enter the Windows network path address "\\[name of pc]\Music" into the Roon "Network share location" and click the "Add network share" button I receive the error message "There was an Unexpected Error: UnexpectedError". I have followed the instructions to add a network share on the Roon website, but I was unable to add a network share. I would prefer to add the Music folder by USB as that seems like the most straightforward option, but if that is not possible would it be possible to assist with adding a network share? Thanks. - Richard

Describe your network setup

It is possible:

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, when I connect the NUC to my PC by USB, I do not see any of the drives on my PC in the Roon “add folder” section.

@rgc21, I believe @Suedkiez’s recommendation and instruction link states that a USB SSD or hard drive can be connected to the NUC. A direct connection via USB between the NUC and PC isn’t supported.

Do you have access to an external USB SSD or hard drive to which you can migrate your music library and then, once migrated, connect the USB drive to the NUC?

Right, I hadn’t considered that this might be attempted

Thanks for clarifying that a USB connection between the NUC and PC is not supported.

I would like to be able to watch the Music folder on my PC as I somewhat routinely add music to the folder and I don’t want to have to manually move that new music over to an external hard drive to “update” my Roon Music folder.

Is it possible to set up a network share that would allow me to watch the folder on my PC? Thanks.

It’s possible, yes. I think your problem starts here:

This must be solved first because as long as the folder is not properly shared on Windows, nothing that you do in ROCK will make it work.

This seems to be a fairly common Windows problem. Maybe this helps:

Thank you both for your help. I think I have figured out a workaround here. I also have my Music folder backed up to a NAS running unraid. This Music folder is accessible over the local network. I was able to add a network share pointing to this music folder (on my NAS instead of the PC).

As Suedkiez mentioned, I think the culprit here is the share permissions in Windows, however I am not sure how to rectify this. For now I will just point Roon to the music folder on my NAS.
