Describe the issue

adding a network share

Describe your network setup

ASUS router

Try adding the username and password for the router.

Eg: username admin and password admin, hopefully you changed them from the default.

Nope that didn’t work. Same nebulous error message.

Does using the smb option work? smb://host/share

Do you have any shares successfully setup?

I’m not familiar with the smb option. Would the information entered be the same except for back slashes? I had a successful backup previously setup but ROON kept telling me the drive was full and no further backups were successful. However, the Windows pc showed that the folder only had 380 MB of data on a 2 GB drive. So, I switched out the drive for an unused one and now I can’t reconnect to the shared drive.

It’s your share really called just „j“?

It’s the drive letter. It also has a name but I was following the ROON example for adding a network share.

Try using the the share name under which it is known to Windows?

Yup, tried that but same response. Unexpected error!

You may not be able to share the drive itself. Try creating a folder on the drive and sharing that instead…

Hi @W_Jeffrey_Lee,
Thanks for writing in to ask us about this issue. I agree with what @Geoff_Coupe said. Did trying to share a specific folder work?

I tried a specific folder that I created and shared but I still got the unexpected error response.

So it’s a folder on a Windows PC? Are you using a Windows local account as the username in Roon’s Add network share screen? That is, you should NOT be using a Microsoft Account (which has the form of an email address); that does not work here.

Ok, so that explains it. I forgot that when I upgraded from Windows 10 to 11, it made me use an email address for the username. In Windows 10, I optioned to use a non-email based username because of the ROON requirement. Strangely, ROON had no problem with the email username until the problem with backups and hard drive disc space that prompted me to switch to a new drive hoping that would fix the backup issue. Everything is good now and backups are being completed. Thanks for your assistance.
