Describe the issue

I cannot add a watched folder from a external drive

Describe your network setup

BT/EE router, Mac

Hi @Julie_Meikle,

Thanks for sharing the screenshot — it looks like you’re trying to add a folder from an external drive that’s connected to your Mac. To make it accessible from Roon, you’ll first need to enable SMB file sharing on macOS.

Please follow this step-by-step guide:
:backhand_index_pointing_right: How to create a shared folder on Mac and add it as a watched folder in Roon

In short:

  1. Go to System Settings → General → Sharing.
  2. Turn on File Sharing.
  3. Click the “i” button next to File Sharing and make sure your external drive or folder is added under Shared Folders.
  4. Under Users, give your account Read & Write access.
  5. Note your Mac’s local IP address (you can find it in System Settings → Network → Details).
  6. Use that IP address in Roon’s Add network share window with this format:
smb://<your-mac-ip>/Volumes/My Red Passport/Music

For example:

smb://192.168.1.25/Volumes/My Red Passport/Music
  1. Enter your Mac username and password, then click Add network share.

This should let Roon connect successfully to the folder on your external drive.

Thanks. Tried that but getting “Unexpected error” message

Hi @Julie_Meikle,

Is the external drive directly connected to your Nucleus? Or, is it plugged into your iMac?

What happens if you try:

smb://<your-mac-ip>/Volumes

If the external drive is plugged into the iMac, there may be some additional share settings you’ll need to enable - the article Vadim shared above takes you through those steps.

Please give that a try and let us know the results - thank you! :raising_hands:

Bingo! It worked when I took Volumes out. So just
smb://ip address/My Red Passport/Music for Roon
Thank you
