Describe the issue

I've stopped using Roon in Coimbra, Portugal with a PC, which I unauthorized. Now I reside in Azores, Portugal, where I'm using Nucleus, and I cannot connect to Roon server. Yesterday I could connect for a while, with many interruptions and hangouts. Now, when I use the option "select a different Ronn Server" and "connect to your Roon Server" appears and a green ready mark shows, I hit "connect" and nothing happens (it doesn't move to another screen). It sometimes showed a red mark and searched forever.
I've rebooted Nucleus several times, reset Database and Settings and reinstalled the remote app. I used different equipment for remotes. I rebooted the router. I really don't know what to do.
Please help!

Describe your network setup

Altice Portugal MEO FiberGateway Router GR241AG, TP-LINK Magic 1 power line extenders (only for remotes - Nucleus is Ethernet connected, Silent Angel switch

Hi @Fernando_Machado,

Thank you for your post. We’ve requested diagnostic logging from the affected Nucleus - please turn the machine on at your convenience and open Roon on a remote to allow for the log report to upload to our secure servers.

Depending on the topology and settings, both managed switches and powerline adapters can improperly forward the multicast traffic required for a successful device announcement and pairing between RoonServer and Roon Remote.

Is your Nucleus connected to the router, the powerline adapter, or to the switch? Please share a brief overview of the network arrangement, including how you’ve configured the network equipment relative to the Roon remotes.

The most useful A/B test would be to connect both the Nucleus and a Roon Remote (laptop or desktop) to the main router using ethernet. See if you can establish and retain a connection between those two devices in Roon, and then add your network equipment back in between one unit at a time.

Ensure settings related to multicast forwarding and IGMP snooping are turned on in any network settings administration pages.

We’ll have a more precise sense of the problem once log reports reach our servers and will follow up then. Please try the suggestions above in the meantime and let us know the results. Thank you!

Thanks.
Nucleus is connected by an ethernet cable from the router on a different room to the Silent Angel Bonn 8, then to Nucleus. It has worked this way for many years. Now I did connect directly to the router cable, to no effect. The tablet or smartphone is Wi-fi linked to the power line extender, as always.
I’m not much of a network expert, so help me with different suggestions.
I’ve already turned Nucleus off and on many times. I did it again, this time even disconnecting the cable.

What’s the make and model of this?

Is it the TP-Link Magic 1 you mentioned?

What happens if you connect to the WiFi on your main router? Turn off the powerline extenders.

I’m thinking the extenders will be broadcasting a separate WiFi on a different subnet, unless they are/can be set to repeater mode.

Hello @Fernando_Machado.

As you mentioned here, you performed the Database and Setting reset, so the WebUI is available via the browser? Please confirm that the WebUI is avaliable via the browser

As we do not see the Nucleus in our diagnostic data, and the logs haven’t been uploaded since yesterday. Do you see the flashing lights near the Ethernet port? There should be yellow and green.

The extender is DEVOLO Magic 1, not Tp-Link. I need it for the Wi-fi to use the app. But when I use direct wi-fi from the router, the problem is the same.

Hello @Fernando_Machado,

Thank you for the update. Could you please provide responses to the questions I raised in my previous message? That will help us speed up the troubleshooting process.

Looking forward to your reply.

Yes, the WEB UI is available. It was from there that I reset Database and Settings. I also reinstalled software and rebooted from there, but also switching Nucleus on and off.
When I use the WiFi directly from the router the problem is the same: it looks for the server, sometimes finds it and a green dot appears. When I press ‘connect’ is keeps ‘waiting for the Roon server’

… Then, if I ‘select a different Roon server’, press “yes”, the cycle continues, hanging permanently.
‘Connect’ right of the the green dot doesn’t operate immediately and takes several seconds to the “waiting for server” screen.

Yes, the lights near the ethernet port on Nucleus are: one steady yellow and one flashing green

Hello @Fernando_Machado

Let’s try this:

  • Stop RoonServer from running in Nucleus’s WebUI

  • Navigate to your Nucleus’ Database Location

  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”

  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”

  • Restart the RoonServer in the WebUI to generate a new Database

  • Reinstall Roon Os from the WebUI

  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Roon Server” and connect to the new database

  • If everything starts up as expected Restore your Backup prior to the issue starting

I stopped the server software.
How can I navigate to database location since I don’t log in?

Hello @Fernando_Machado,

To access the Nucleus internal storage, you can follow this guide.

How to find the database is highlighted here :

I’m sorry, but I couldn’t find any help from your hints: first, I don’t use an installed SSD in Nucleus; second, I’m not using a PC with Roon Nucleus.

From the web UI, I rebooted, restarted, reinstalled and have already reset the database before.

The “Connect to your Roon Server” appears, not always, when it does only after a long wait, the green dot shows ‘Ready’, then it cycles again when associating.

Now, it’s hanging again at “looking for your Roon Server” page.

Please provide good guidance, so this problem is overcome.

Hey @Fernando_Machado,

Sorry for any confusion here! You do need a computer to refresh a Roon Server database, based on your account admin it did look like you had a PC added as a Roon remote.

We also see a Samsung Galaxy TabS, but it appears to be running an older version of Roon. Could you download and update the latest version of Roon on this device, and see if you still have issues?

Thank you! :folded_hands:

Do I need to install Roon Server software on a PC? I used it this way in another house. I unauthorised it so as to use Nucleus in this house, like I have always done.

Will I have to bypass Nucleus whens installing the software on a PC here?
I don’t know what to do. I’ve always used Nucleus without trouble.

I use the old Samsung galaxy tab S only as a remote ro Roon. I see it’s version 1442, but it was working until last november, when I went to the other house. Now I cannot update the app on this old tablet (there’s only a legacy version on Google Play store), so I’ll uninstall the app and stop using it.

But with newer equipment as remotes, the access problem to Roon Nucleus exists. I can’t connect.

Please give me a list of step by step instructions so that I can use Roon again. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense to stop using Nucleus.

Hi @Fernando_Machado,

No, you don’t need to install Roon on this computer. It will just be used to remotely access your Nucleus’ file system so you can rename the RoonServer folder as @vadim suggested. That step should help get your Nucleus up and running again, so there’s no need to worry—you’re not bypassing or replacing your Nucleus.

If you let us know what kind of computer you’re using, we’ll be happy to send you step-by-step instructions to guide you through the process.

I can use Huawei Matebook 16s with Windows 24H2 for that.
A tablet is not enough? I now use a OnePlus Tab 2 (Android 15).

I’ve been using Roon Web UI. Do you nean using this access?

My email is (you know, of course): [moderated]

Please help, since I haven’t been using Roon for some time.

Thank you.

Fernando

Hi @Fernando_Machado,

Thanks for the update! Odd that we’re not seeing your Huawei Matebook 16s listed as a Roon Remote device within your account info.

Taking a quick step back, can you triple-confirm all your Roon devices are running on the same local subnet within your local network? Are you still bypassing your powerline adapters?

Let’s also bypass your silent angel switch temporarily and get a direct ethernet connection from your Nucleus to your router. Then reboot both.

After simplifying the setup above and rebooting your devices, if you’re still having issues, below are the steps to reset your Roon Server database from your Nucleus from your Windows 24H2:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon Database
  • Stop RoonServer from running in Nucleus’s WebUI
  • Navigate to your Nucleus’ Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Restart the RoonServer in the WebUI to generate a new Database
  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Roon Server” and connect to the new database

If you’re having issues accessing your Nucleus database, it is a known issue caused by Microsoft tightening security. Keep the username and password as guest and guest, but you have to tell Windows that it’s OK to connect to your Nucleus system as well.

Read this article on how to solve it. Start at step 6 if you have Windows 11 Pro, or step 8 if you have Windows 11 Home.

We’ll be on standby for your reply and results! :raising_hands:

Not seeing Huawei: simple - I am no using it as a remote. I guess I would have to install Roon Remote on the PC, right? This could have been number 1 hint…
The list only points out to hell pages.
How do I check what subnet I’m in?
I cannot use the PC in this room without the extender for Wifi, since I don’t have a USB to Ethernet adaptor here.
The method you suggest won’t work since I cannot log in Roon.

I installed Roon remote, but it’s asking me to unauthorise Nucleus. Will have to log out all instances then uninstall/reinstall.
