Unable to Import Music to Local Storage on NUC ROCK (ref#MJP767)

How can we help?

· I'm having trouble adding music to my library

Describe the issue

I have NUC ROCK, I am not currently able to import my music to local storage on the ROCK. I was able to do this in the past by mounting smb:///data on my mac, and copying all of my files to the storage directory.

Describe your network setup

This evening for the first time in quite a while, my local files were not there. I connected my mac to the ROCK and there was nothing in storage. I re-copied my music files and ROCK is not scanning or recognizing them. There is nothing in Settings/Storage about local storage, just the FOLDERS option that allows me to connect to another server that I do not want to do. My rock is connected via ethernet through a managed switch to my home network. My mac is connected also via ethernet to the same switch. Playback of qobuz music works fine. This could have been a problem for some time as it is not frequent that I play music in my collection that is not also in qobuz.

Several possibilities spring to mind as to the cause:

  • This may be a hardware problem on the drive used for music storage on your ROCK - is the drive internal or a USB drive?
  • If it is internal, check that the physical SATA connection is still solidly connected.
  • If it is a USB drive, also check the connection (and try a different cable)
  • If it is a USB drive, and it has been formatted as NTFS, attach it to a Windows PC, run chkdsk /f on it and then (important) eject it safely before reattaching it to the ROCK/NUC.

For some reason the folder appears to gave gone awol, have you tried adding (in addition to @Geoff_Coupe suggestions) the normal destination folder again?

What do you see when you open the ROCK web interface at http://rock.local ? Under the heading Internal Music Storage, you should see its status. If you run the Format function, it should create an empty folder named InternalStorage under the Storage folder, which should be accessible from your Mac.

The NUC has an internal WD Blue 1TB SSD for internal storage. But I do not see evidence of it on the rock.local page. Also browsing the device I do not see /…/Storage/InternalStorage. Perhaps that drive has come loose or failed. I’ll open it up later today and take a look.

Did a hard boot and the local storage appeared, and was empty. I tried to format it via the ROCK web page and that failed. Tried various things with the SSD connected to my Mac and to a Linux host. The SSD appears to have failed. Unfortunate as it’s 18 months old and has only been used for this purpose.

Thank you all for your help.

And if anyone has a suggestion on a reliable SSD for this purpose, let me know.

Personally, I use Samsung SSDs, but even there I had one fail on me about 10 years ago. Nothing’s perfect. Backups are essential.

I have been using two of These SSDs for sometime without any problems.

I purchased a Samsung SSD last night and it was on my doorstep this morning!

Re: backups, I agree. My music is stored on multiple locations (my workstation and backed up to my SAN). The copy on the SSD within ROCK is not what I consider the primary copy, so this episode is an inconvenience rather than a catastrophe.

Hi @Kelly_Burkhart ,

Thanks for letting us know that you were able to pinpoint the issue to the failing drive. It sounds like you’re on the right path here, reinstalling and using another SSD is the best course of action. I’ll mark this one as solved but if you run into any issues before the thread closes, please let us know and we can assist, thanks!

Everything is working properly with the new SSD installed.
