· I used an old iMac (2012) as Roon Serve to listen Roon for years, recently after Roon update, this iMac could not be used anymore, it even could not be able to open Roon.
Now I want to use my MacBook Air with M1 chip for replacing dead iMac as Roon Server, but do not know how to do. Please help.
The recent Roon update introduced new minimum system requirements, which is why your 2012 iMac can no longer open the application.
To use your M1 MacBook Air as the new Roon Core, you will need to install Roon on the new machine and restore your database from a previous backup. You can find the complete guide on how to migrate your setup here: Migrating To A New Core
If you would prefer to keep using your 2012 iMac as your dedicated Roon Core rather than moving it to your new MacBook Air, there is a workaround. The issue is simply that older versions of macOS no longer support the modern software libraries Roon requires. If you are comfortable with a little technical tinkering, you can wipe macOS from that older Mac and install a lightweight Linux operating system (like Ubuntu) on it instead. The Linux version of Roon Server runs beautifully on that hardware, which would give your old machine a completely new lease on life as a dedicated music server!
