Hi. Third of my four questions this morning. And this one is truly basic, for which I apologize. I can't interpret the instructions that tell me how to backup Roon. I try to follow them as closely as I can, but I can't get Roon to recognize the hard drive I'm hoping to use for the backup. Either I have it inserted at the wrong point in the information chain or I'm not providing Roon with the correct information to find it. I'm a complete idiot when it comes to technology, and I fear that the backup instructions assume some basic competence in tech that I don't possess. If someone could give me a step-by-step set of instructions written in lay person's terms, I would greatly appreciate it. I want to be a responsible Roon user, and I recognize that at just over 6,700 albums I don't have a huge collection on Roon, but it's big enough, and has taken long enough to assemble (especially the LPs) that adequate backup seems to be a good idea. Sorry for having so little knowledge. Ian
Describe your network setup
Nucleus + controlled by either a MacMini, MacBook Pro, iPhone, or iPad. Router and modem are those provided by cable company. Ethernet through power supply. I play things either through wifi to a Samsung Q990D soundbar (which works surprisingly well and promotes marital harmony) or, in my other listening space, through a Logitech switch to a Cambridge Audio MxN10, a Dac Magic 200M, Schitt Sage and Vidar, and finally to Magnepan LRS+ speakers.
How is the hard drive formatted (NTFS/MacOS/exFAT)? NTFS and MacOS formatted hard drives can have issues when trying to use them with Nucleus, it’s always best to use an exFAT formatted drive on Linux machines (such as the Nucleus).
Can I reformat the hard drive to exFAT, and will I be able to read the information on a Mac if I do so? I really don’t know anything about this, as you can probably tell.
exFAT works with Linux, Mac and Windows and is great for portability between OS’s. Since the Nucleus runs a Linux derived OS, it cannot write to an external HD which is formatted HFS+, aka a Mac ormat.
So, Solution 1 would be to copy all the data off, reformat that drive exFAT, copy data back.
OR,
Solution 2 and what I would do, is to buy a new drive, format it exFAT, copy music to it and then plug that drive into the Nucleus. That way you have now have a backup of all your music!
Thanks Big Dan. I’ve reformatted the drive but seem to be no further along. I have the drive attached to my Mac. When I try to schedule a backup to it, though, Roon wants network share information and I can’t supply that. But reading your post, it seems I should have the hard drive attached to the Nucleus?
Hi @Ian_Gallacher1,
Your Nucleus wants network share information because the backup drive is attached to a different computer. Attaching the drive to the Nucleus would likely be the simplest solution. You could leave the drive attached to your Mac instead but you would need to configure the Mac to share that drive with the network and then enter the network share information you were asked for before.
