Unable to Reinstall Roon due to "Please quit all instances of Roonserver" Message (ref#PXJN70)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

Tell us what's going on

· I have had Roon for just under 5 years, and it has mostly operated beautifully. Currently, I can not make it work. I had not used it for several months, and I was used to a glitchy connection that might take several attempts to connect my Roon server with my Roon remote. I have a 2025 HP laptop running Microsoft Home 11 that I used exclusively as my Roon server. I use a 5th generation iPad for my remote. My router is a Spectrum WiFi 6. Recently, I attempted to start Roon and could not connect the server to the remote. I tried turning both devices off at least 5 times with the same result. Since I had backed up my server data base recently, I decided to uninstall Roon on my server and reinstall it with the backed up database. I removed Roon successfully from my laptop, and immediately tried to download new software from the Roon website. I downloaded the Rooninstaller64 successfully, but when I try to open it, I receive this message: "Please quit all instances of Roonserver before continuing". Any advice you can give me to get beyond this would be greatly appreciated.

There is only one Rooninstaller64, and it is the one that will not open for me. Any advice you can give me to get beyond this would be greatly appreciated.:

Right click on the Roon Icon, should be an option to Quit Roon.

Thanks for taking the time to try to help me with this, Mike.

I don’t have a Roon icon on the laptop I use as a Roon server. I only have the Roon installer app that won’t open. However, I have not deleted Roon from the iPad that I use as a Roon remote. Is that what you’re talking about?

No, we mean the Roon symbol in the dock right beside the date and clock (bottom right of your monitor). You may have to click the chevron there to see all symbols. See also:

Hello @Jan_Lukens,

I know it can be incredibly frustrating when Windows tells you a program is running, but you can’t actually see it anywhere on your screen!

The other community members are referring to the Windows System Tray (the small icons near your clock), but let’s take a more foolproof approach to clear out these invisible background tasks.

Here is the easiest way to force them to close so you can start fresh:

If the installer still gives you that error after a fresh reboot, we need to manually force the background processes to close using Task Manager.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard at the same time to open the Task Manager.
  2. Make sure you are on the Processes tab (the icon looks like a grid of squares on the left menu).
  3. Scroll down the list and look for anything named Roon, RoonAppliance,RAATServer , or RoonGoer.
  4. Right-click on each Roon-related item you find and select End task.
  5. Once they are all cleared from the list, try running your installer again.

This should finally allow the installation to proceed smoothly!

Once you get Roon successfully installed and opened on your laptop, would you like me to walk you through the exact steps for restoring that database backup you made?

Thanks for your help! This info is very encouraging

I am currently at work, but will try your suggestions this evening

Jan

Hi, Vadim.

That worked beautifully..

Roon has now been successfully re-installed on my laptop.

Yes! If you could provide the steps to install the Roon database that I have backed up on an external hard drive, I would be greatly appreciative.

Thank you!

Jan

Hello @Jan_Lukens,

That is great news! I am so glad the Task Manager trick cleared those hidden processes and the fresh installation went smoothly.

To restore your database from within the Roon app, just make sure your external hard drive is securely plugged into your HP laptop, and follow these simple steps:

  1. Open Roon and go to Settings (using the menu in the top left corner).
  2. Select the Backups tab from the list on the left.
  3. Look for the “Restore” section and click the Find Backups button.
  4. Click Browse… to open the file browser.
  5. Navigate to your external hard drive, select your RoonBackups folder, and confirm.
  6. Roon will display a list of your available backups. Choose the most recent date from the list and click to restore.

Depending on the size of your library, it might take a few minutes to unpack and load everything.

Hello, Vadim.

The data base was successfully loaded onto the laptop I use as my Roon server. I attached another external hard drive with my music library, and the interface on my laptop now looks like it always did before. However, I have the same problem that I had before I started this whole process. The iPad I use for my remote keeps displaying the message: ‘Waiting for your Roon Server’…followed by ‘Roon is still trying to connect, but it’s taking longer than normal.’ Any suggestions? Thanks

Hey @Jan_Lukens,

Thanks for the follow-up!

Two additional items to check on the issue iPad:

  1. Head into your iOS system settings>privacy>local network and confirm Roon is enabled. Retoggle it if it’s already enabled. Reboot Roon and try to connect again.
  2. If that doesn’t help, completely remove the Roon mobile app from your iPad, and perform a fresh install. Let me know if this helps 👍

Hey, Benjamin!

You finally ended my long dilemma. I have my music back, and I have you to thank!

I checked the IOS privacy settings, but Roon already had permission on the local network.

I then tried Roon Remote (Legacy) and Roon Essentials Remote, and neither one worked. So, I asked AI if I could just use the Roon app as my remote, and it told me to go for it. It worked!!! I am very happy that I have my music back. Thank you very much!!!

I

One last question. To permit Roon to operate on my network, I need to give permission for the app to pass through the Windows firewall on the laptop I use as my Roon server. As I understand it, there are 3 apps that need permission - Roon.exe, RAATServer.exe, and RoonServer.exe. When I go to Windows Security, then firewall, then Allow an app through firewall, the only app I can find is Roon.exe. I also can not find RAATServer.exe, and RoonServer.exe in my list of installed apps on the laptop, either. Roon is only working if public and private firewalls are off, so I can’t use it. Any suggestions? Thanks

@Jan_Lukens ,

Thanks for reaching us back.

In order to add RoonServer and RAAT server you need to browse them manually. This option should be available in the end of the dropdown list you get.

RoonServer and RAATServer are stored by following paths respectively:

C:\Users\{your user name}\AppData\Local\RoonServer\Application\RoonServer.exe

and

C:\Users\{your user name}\AppData\Local\RAATServer\Application\RAATServer.exe

Let us know please if you were able to figure it out.

Thanks.

Thank you for your help. Today, when I logged on to the laptop I use for my Roon server, it simply asked me if I wanted to allow RAATServer and Roon appliance (?). I gave permission, and I now am enjoying Roon with public and private firewalls up and running.

Thanks again! Have a great weekend, Jan
