I have removed all possible filters entirely ( parametric eq, convolution etc. ) in order to get the shortest, cleanest signal path. However one filter can NOT be removed: “Unknown filter”. Does anybody know how to remove that “Unknown” filter?
Hi @bram_hillen,
Can you post a screenshot of Roon’s signal path.
Then we will see what you see, and be able to offer the best advice.
Hi Carl,
The “Unknown filter” does not show up. However it ís a filter, showing clearly audible differences when switching between enbled and disabled. Frustratingly it seems to be impossible to remove!
Can it be you’re mixing an “old” client with a “new” server? Please look at your Settings (cogwheel) | About screen in your client (tablet) to check. Update the software if needed. If you have another client (PC / Mac), check there too for matching versions and maybe, if they match, you can see the name and remove the filter there.
PS: As can be seen in your screenshot of Roon’s DSP settings, there is a “Bypass all filters” switch that you can use until you figured out how to remove the offending filter. As it’s name implies, it bypasses the filters which is your intent if I’m not mistaken.
Hi @bram_hillen, thanks for sharing the screenshot … as @BlackJack advises it’s worth double checking you running the latest versions of Roon Server and Roon App (on your tablet).
If that does not help, the I’d suggest requesting assistance from Roon technical support, by following the procedure below.
To equip the Roon Technical Support team to assist you directly, please follow this link to provide the details of your case to Technical Support: Technical Support Request
Respond to the prompts there to ensure that you’ve performed basic troubleshooting and to ensure Technical Support has the full details necessary to expedite Technical Support’s investigation into the case. Your responses will auto-generate a Community thread in the appropriate section.
PS If you take this route I’d be happy to merge this topic over into Support so all this history is together.
Hi Carl, as you’ve advised, I checked the Roon version on my phone and tablet and I can confirm the latest version is installed ( V1.0.62 ). The same applies for my Grimm MU2 player: the firmware is up to date. I will take the route you have proposed. I’d be very happy if you are willing to merge this topic over into Support so all this history is together.
Thank you so much for all the effort and help.
Kind regards,
Bram

Describe your network setup
LHY switches, Grimm MU2

Any reason you’re not sharing a screenshot of the whole screen when the filter is selected in Muse, i.e., click on the blue >? Is the issue that there’s no × Remove filter option, or that this does nothing?
Incidentally, I have merged your earlier posts and replies into this Support thread.
Hi,
I think you can open this „unknown filter“ with the the blue button to the right.
In the next opening window there should be a button to disable the filter and than it will be gone.
Hi @bram_hillen,
Thanks for writing in and sharing your report! As others have mentioned, are you able to click into the filter and click the ‘x Remove filter’ option in the upper right-hand corner of your screen?
If this still doesnt work for you, you can try refreshing your RAATServer database settings as well - you can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:
- Create a Backup of your current Roon database
- Exit out of Roon
- Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
- Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
- Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
- Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder
Dear Sebastian,
Thank you for your message.
I am familiar with the method of removing the DSP filters in Roon, by first opening them and then tapping the cross at the top right. Unfortunately the “Unknown filter” cannot be opened. At the same time, the filter is really present in the signal path: switching the filter on and off is clearly audible. The question remains how that filter got there, and especially how to get rid of it.
Thank you for the advice to try refreshing my RAATServer database settings as well and create a backup of my current Roon database in order to get rid of the “Unknown filter”. Undoubtedly the purpose of the database backup will be to get everything back as it is now. I’m afraid this will also reset the Unknown filter as well.
Hi @bram_hillen,
You are correct that that would be the case. Do you happen to have a backup from before the unknown filter appeared?
No, I haven’t made any backup until now.
Hey @bram_hillen,
Refreshing your RAATServer won’t touch anything related to your content or library settings, only your audio-based settings or DSP settings, and since you’re looking to remove everything anyway, you likely won’t need to restore any backups.
Were you able to give it a try?
No, I haven’t made any backup until now.
Thank you. One question remains: please can you explain how to refresh the RAATserver, step by step?
Hi @bram_hillen,
Another useful test would be to simply locate the gear icon in the far right-hand corner of the MUSE main page and restore the settings to default.
This will remove filters that you’ve customized and only launch those that come standard with the device.
I did so. The “Unknown” filter persists, even after tapping the default setting. Grimm Audio is working on an alternative, making it possible to use Audirvana. As soon it is reality, I will leave Roon!

Since I use de Fixed Volumecontrol, instead of the Device Volumecontol, the problem of te persisting "Unknown filter" is solved, because since the latest Roon update, selecting the Fixed Volumecontrol means ALL dsp's are bypassed entirely.
