Describe the issue

Having a problem restoring backup on a new pc. The old PC is connected to the network and drives mapped. I can see the backup folders but when selected Roon cannot find any backups. The old PC is malfunctioning in various ways and led to Roon failing to load. See https://community.roonlabs.com/t/library-loading-issue-in-roon-ref-4h4qp9/297637/12https://community.roonlabs.com/t/library-loading-issue-in-roon-ref-4h4qp9/297637/12

Describe your network setup

Good day @Nathan_Fowler !

I hope you’re doing well today.

Thanks for sharing your problem with us.

Could you please compress the backup to .zip and upload it to our Database Storage:
https://workdrive.zohoexternal.com/collection/gnhz54df9ddffa33d49a3be8619bd6376a5de/external
?

We’ll inspect it and let you know whether it can be done something with that database/backup ?

Thanks!

Looking forward to your reply!

Regards.

Hi @Nathan_Fowler,

We haven’t seen a response but we’re eager to ensure you’ve had a fighting chance to restore your Backup and migrate this database.

First off, please share a screenshot of the page where you’re stuck in Roon (Settings → Backups).

Also, make sure that Roon is exempted in the Windows Defender firewall for due diligence in the meantime.

From there, please navigate to your RoonServer’s [Database Location], find the RoonServer folder, compress it (.zip), and upload it to the link that @alex_h shared in the post above. We need to try to load this database in-house to check for corruption, or at least inspect diagnostic logging.

For a more thorough overview of the migration process and backup restortation, make sure you’ve seen these articles:

We’ll watch for a response. Thank you!

Hi there, sorry for my delay in responding. Work and other life stuff is slowing me down.

The issue I have has also moved on from the initial topic. I will share rhe details and the backup file over the weekend if that’s okay. I do still need support.

Few things are more important to me the getting my Roon Library back up and running again!

Thanks, I really appreciate your willingness to help.

Sounds good @Nathan_Fowler - let us know the details of your issues when you’re able to!

Hi Benjamin, Alex,

Right, so good news. With the help of my work’s IT support, we have fixed an issue that was preventing my new and old computers from communicating properly. Roon can now see and restore backups from my old machine. The first backup I tried loaded fine, but for some reason, it did not contain any of my tags, rendering it useless. However, the second backup I attempted to restore did include my tags data. I have also been able to successfully back up my Roon library on my new machine. Considerring backups not saving was one of the later-stage issues with my old PC failing, I am very pleased indeed.

The successfully restored backup dates back to January, so I have lost some data, but I have an exported spreadsheet of my Roon library from my old PC just before Roon stopped working. There are likely a couple of thousand tracks I will need to apply tags to, but this is considerably easier than the 25k tracks I would need to retag if starting from scratch. So I think (hope) the panic is over. The data is there

I do have a question, though. As it seems fairly likely that my old machine was the source of my Roon Library problems, is it likely that there will be any lingering Library issues on my new machine? Are you able to check?

Cheers,
Nathan

That’s great news @Nathan_Fowler and excellent work done on your part!

We took a look at a fresh Roon Server diagnostic report from your new PC and everything is looking good! :raising_hands:

Happy listening!

Hey man,
Thanks. It’s been a while coming, I had to wait a while to buy a new PC and in the back of my mind I was more than a bit nervous it wasn’t going to work out. Having experienced Library failures before, I’ve learned to take precautions with backups, library exports and mirroring my playlists in local and streamed media sources. I have to say though, seeing the Roon backup work as it should was the best feeling, so thank you so much for building a stable application.
Cheers guys.
