Describe the issue

I am using Roon 2.0 on a Mac mini Apple silicon computer. I have another Mac mini. I'm using as a server. I have a room and Point, which is an Intel NUK with rock installed. I have a dedicated ethernet subnet with all of my devices on it. Everything is working, but I cannot see my endpoint in my room software where I'm playing the music. I can play music to the computer. But no other endpoints show up to select to play music. My main Soundsystem is connected to my rock endpoint. The Rock server is visible on my network. I can ping it and I can access it through HTML. I can restart the rock program. The only problem is I cannot find it as an endpoint in the roon software. I have tried restarting all the softwares restarting the computers, unplugging the ethernet and plugging it back in turning my deck on and off nothing seems to work

Describe your network setup

My router is a UniFi UDM Pro

Normally my rock endpoint shows up here as “Border Patrol” Like the “M1Mini”

Hi @Michael_Powers,

Let’s take a step back - are you using this Nuc as a ROCK (which is a dedicated RoonServer machine running RoonOS)? We don’t see a RoonOS instance in diagnostics associated with your account.

Do you mean this NAS is serving as a Roon Bridge?

In any case, a few things to check:

  1. Verify in your Silicon Mac System Settings under Privacy & Security that Roon has local network access.

  2. Check that Roon is added as an exception, along with RAATServer, in any third-party stateful firewalls

  3. Reboot all your Roon devices.

I am not sure of the correct language to describe it. I thought ROCK is an end point that my DAC is connected to. I also have a roon server located on another computer which serves a file to the ROCK. I use a third computer to run my roon software to play music (instruct the server to send file to the ROCK). This system has worked previously and occasionaly Roon has had a problem finding the ROCK. Not it is not fining it at all.

In privacy and security I have given roon acces to “Files and Folders” and "Full disk access. I cant find “network Access”

I can log into the NUC with ROCK. Here is a screenshot.

Hey @Michael_Powers,

Thanks for the follow up!

ROCK runs Roon Server, I think you’re attempting to use it as an endpoint to stream audio to. Here’s more info on ROCK:

Within your home network (and with 1 Roon subscription) you’ll only be able to have a single Roon Server active and running. With Roon Server running both on your ROCK, and on your Mac computer, you’ll need to decide which machine you want to use as your Server machine.

Once you’ve decided this, stop Roon Server from running on the other machine. :+1:

What is the specific endpoint, and how is it connected to your ROCK? Can you also test out using different cables / ports temporarily to ensure there isn’t any hardware failure?

Thanks!

Are you saying that ROCK is a substitute for the Roon server software? It seems if that were so, then all I would have to do is turn quit the Roon server software on the computer that hosts my Library. However, I don’t know how to tell ROCK where my library is. Also, this setup worked previously apparently it should not have. I had thought it was like Roon Bridge, in that it creates an endpoint.

I have a computer I have named “ROCK” the only thing on that computer is an installation of ROCK that I downloaded from Roon. I have my DAC connected to that computer. Previously, on my computer that I use Roon to actually play my music, I have been able to see and enable “Rock” as an endpoint. In the setting I have named that endpoint “Border Patrol (The brand of the DAC connected to the ROCK)” Does any of that help clarfiy the problem or the diagnostic process.

You are totally confusing Roon, Roon Server, Roon ROCK, etc.

Alright, when I disconnect from my mac mini server, it asks my to choose a server it gives me an option to select either my mac mini or the roon optimized core kit. It specifies an Update is required. I have gone to the rock interface and did a reinstall. It reports success and offers a run time. Back in the roon software it still specifies ROCK needs an update and I cannot connect to it as a server. Any advice?

You need to decide which of your devices you are going to use as your Roon server and which as end-points. Roon ROCK is a Roon server software.

Hello @Michael_Powers ,

Thanks for giving the reinstall a try. I checked with the team, and since your ROCK install is so old, the best solution here would be to perform a complete ROCK reinstall using our ROCK Install Guide. If you have a backup of your ROCK library, please try to follow the below guide.

I am trying to install the latest version of Roon optimized core kit. “roonbox-linuxx64-nuc4-usb-factoryreset.img.qz” I have successfully created a USB thumb drive with Etcher. Put it in my NUC and reboot with f10. I get the menu to select the thumb drive, I select the thumb drive. Hit enter. Then the NUC starts up the old version of ROCK. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi @Michael_Powers ,

I would check in the BIOS settings to see if you can set USB boot priority to the highest priority. Are you selecting the right option? For some USB devices, you may need to select the sub-partition from the list. If you still have issues, can you share a screenshot of the boot options presented?

OK, I could not get my rock server to boot on the upgraded version two USB image. I created USB’s and two different computers two different systems with the same results. I reformatted the nuke and installed a new windows 10 system. I’ve installed Roon bridge on the computer and started it. The computer is visible on the network with my other music Computers. However, it does not show up as an endpoint in my roon software. I can see the Roon processes in the task manager. Im stumped again.

Hi @Michael_Powers ,

I am looking over your account, but I don’t see any Windows 10 devices registered. Since you are using a Windows PC, I would verify that both Roon.exe and RAATServer.exe have been added as exceptions to your Windows firewall.

You can use these instructions to add the exceptions and the executables themselves would be located in your Database Location/Application folder path.

I would also add these exceptions to any Antivirus or other Firewall blocking applications you may have and ensure that you connected to your network via a Private network, not a Public one, see this guide for more information.

Let us know if this helps.
