· Hi. I just bought lifetime subscription and in the settings - storage - folders I added folder with music files on my external SSD SanDisk extreme pro 1TB and everything worked perfectly on my MacMini late 2014 iOS Monterey 12.7.6. Then I’ve decided to disconnect external SSD and to connect Samsung Micro SDXC UHS-1 Card 1TB, and my MacMini read it perfectly, but in the ROON setting - storage - add folder I see my Mini-1 - Macintosh HD as I choose in the beginning, and I can’t find the way to go back so I could chose MicroSD card as a primary music storage folder. Please help me to fix this. Sincerely, Andriy Skidanov.

Thanks for writing in and sharing your report, and congrats on the recent subscription!

The fact that your mac recognized the drive is a great sign! It’s likely here that we’ll just need to adjust the drive’s permissions to ensure Roon has access to it.

Below are the steps to ensure the proper settings are enabled:

Before you can tweak individual permissions, you must ensure the drive is “sharable” in your System Settings.

  1. Connect your external drive to your Mac.
  2. Go to the Apple Menu () > System Settings.
  3. Navigate to General > Sharing.
  4. Toggle the switch for File Sharing to On.
  5. Click the "i" (Info) icon next to File Sharing.
  6. Under the Shared Folders list, click the plus (+) button.
  7. Select your external drive from the sidebar and click Add.

Once the drive is in that list, be sure to set your user permissions to Read & Write.

Afterwards, reboot Roon and Roon Server and see if you’re able to access the drive. Thank you! :folded_hands:

Even if File Sharing is on, the Roon App might not have permission to look at external hardware.

  1. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab.
  2. Scroll down the left sidebar to Full Disk Access.
  3. Click the Lock at the bottom left to make changes.
  4. Check the boxes for both Roon and RoonServer.
    1. If they are there: Make sure the boxes next to them are checked.
    2. If they are NOT there: Click the plus (+) button, go to your Applications folder, and add both Roon and RoonServer.
  5. If they aren't in the list, click the + button and add them from your Applications folder.
  6. Restart your MacMini.
While you are in that same Privacy window:
  • Look for Files and Folders in the left-hand column.
  • Find Roon in the list.
  • Ensure the box for Removable Volumes is checked. If Roon isn't allowed to see removable volumes, it will never show your SD card in that sidebar.
If you still run into issues, Roon can sometimes be picky if a drive isn't formatted in a way macOS likes for database indexing.
  • Right-click your SD card in Finder and select Get Info.
  • Check the Format. If it is ExFAT or APFS, you are fine.
  • If it says NTFS, the Mac can read it, but Roon may struggle to maintain a stable connection to it for its database.

Hi. Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it work on my Mac mini (late 2014) with micro sd card inside. My Mac mini was recognizing it and fully accessing it, but after all your recommended steps I fallowed, I couldn’t make it work as Roon didn’t want to show it in settings to choose it as source, so I set Roon server on my 16’ MacBook Pro with M3 pro chip, and it works with exact SD card, but now I experience another ensue with the Roon Ark, as every time I start MacBook Pro in the morning (as I turn it off every night) the ark is not working and I had to try several times different ports, like 55001, 55002, and so on. It is kinda annoying as if I wouldn’t check and leave, my ark won’t work on the go, so I need to check and try to fix it every time. It doesn’t suppose to work this way, I guess, or it does? Was thinking already maybe to buy Roon nucleus one, but I see that you increased the price. Maybe I wait until some holiday when you have some discount? I also was thinking if it’s possible to attach a monitor so I can see and manage Roon the way as I n computer, or not, so how will I manage all settings then not seeing anything?

As you’re waiting on the next update from our technicians, I wanted to touch base about our Nucleus One, since you mentioned being interested in purchasing one for your setup.

We do periodically have deals on hardware throughout the year, however, your hunch is correct; our most notable sales are typically around Black Friday.
