Unable to Set Up and Use New Nucleus with iPad (ref#DFJHLT)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

Tell us what's going on

· I bought a new Nucleus and I’m about to give up and return it, and I haven’t even unboxed it. I have my backup on Dropbox. I downloaded it (I think) to my iPad files because apparently you can’t restore from the backup saved on Dropbox. I have an external hard drive w some music on it connected to the NUC I want to replace. I have Tidal and Qobuz. I would like to backup to the attached storage and that’s not an option either.

I can’t figure out how to make a download available on my iPad so that I could choose that to have Roon restore from there. Will I be able to select this during the new nucleus setup?

I unplugged my external storage w my music, and plugged in a blank thumb drive on my NUC thinking I could designate that as a backup spot, because I have no idea how to create a network drive on my home network. So, I thought I’d just backup to the drive attached to my NUC, but Roon app doesn’t give that as an option and I have no idea how to designate a network fileshare location.

is this going to require an actual computer or can I get by w my iPad?

Also, in the 5 years I’ve had my NUK, I’ve never been able to put my music on the 500 GB hard drive I installed in my NUC. It’s all sitting on an external drive plugged into the NUC. How do I get the files to the internal SSD? I thought I’d put that drive into the new Nucleus, but I’m 99% sure it’s just going to go unused like it is now because I can’t figure out how to move the files.

what am I missing? Do I need an actual computer—not just an iPad? I tried using my wife’s MacBook and using the smb: file extension for sharing and of course that didn’t come close to working to designate a folder for backups. I realize Roon is cheap for a reason, but I’ve reached my limit of DIY and need more help than internet searches.

Tell us about your home network

· Just a regular home mesh network. Everything works fine, it’s moving to a Nucleus, restoring from backup (not Dropbox, because that would be too easy), and moving files to a SSD that are the problems.

Isn’t a NUC a computer? Can you create a drive on your NUC and backup your existing Roon server database to that drive, then restore from there to your Nucleus?

Thanks for the idea. I tried that! Plugged in a thumb drive but Roon didn’t see it and I couldn’t designate a path so I gave up.

I did it! I downloaded my Dropbox backup to a laptop, copied to a thumb drive, plugged it in to the new Nucleus which “saw” it, and Restored from there. Thank god - it’s a miracle!

Now, I just need to figure out how to get my music files from the connected (USB) HDD pluhpgged into the Nucleus, onto the SSD inside the nucleus. Is this even possible with an iPad?

I don’t know anything about trying to use an iPad to do any of this. Do you still have access to the laptop? If you do, you could try to use Windows File Explorer to connect to your Nucleus across your network. Plug the HDD into the laptop and copy the files to your Nucleus internal drive. Be careful you copy them to the correct drive in the Nucleus and not the system drive.

This might seem crazy, but I don’t have a computer to use other than an old Apple. My work computer is on a different network and restricted in what it can do. This is a me problem I know.

But I might buy a cheap Chromebook for things like this.

Don’t buy a Chromebook for use with Roon. It won’t work. I’m not much of an Apple person, but you can probably accomplish the file copying with a Macbook. You may even be able to use your NUC as the “transfer” computer.

Only over the network. Attach the music drive to another pc and then copy over the network. Not sure if an iPad would work, but, you are imho better off using the external drive.

@Rugby is suggesting putting all your music on an external drive and plugging that into the Nucleus as your Roon “watched” folder for all your music. A lot of people prefer doing it that way.

Personally, I prefer music on an internal drive that you install and use an external drive for scheduled Roon backups. Either way is fine. Just don’t make the mistake of putting anything on the Roon system drive that came installed in your Nucleus.

Hmmm. Well I don’t need it to work w Roon, I just need it to see my network and move files from one hard drive to another. But I take your point. And my wife’s old MacBook is useless.

This is exactly what I want. I finally figured out how to use an external drive (tiny memory stick) for saving backups, but my library is on a second external HD connected to the other USB spot on my Nucleus, and I need to move the music files from ther to the internal SSD u installed in the Nucleus.

I pulled the watched external HD off the nucleus and plugged it into a Mac. I was actually able to see the Nucleus and its drives, including internal drive, as a pert of the network and dragged and dropped the music files. It’s currently transferring and Roon is detecting them as that number is increasing. Says it’ll take another 2 hours. Fingers crossed!

Hello @David_Silver,

Thanks for the update — it’s good to see that you were able to access the Nucleus over the network and start copying the music from the external USB drive to the internal SSD.

Once the copy completes, Roon will automatically import the files from the internal storage and you can disconnect the external USB drive if you wish.

If anything looks missing or incorrect once the transfer finishes, feel free to let us know and we’ll be happy to help check it.
