Describe the issue

I previously posted to the Networking community. I am reposting some of the information as suggested by the technical service team.

I generally make a backup once a month, then delete prior backups, usually keeping three. I am on a Synology DS1515+ NAS currently but have purchased an ASUS NUC and plan to migrate to ROCK. Roon runs on a Samsung 850 Pro SSD, 256 KB in the DS with no problems. Media files (FLACS) are located on the DS (1,500 folders, 13,000 files) and fewer links to Tidal albums added to the database.

I am trying to make one final backup prior to the move to the NUC and I am unable to start the backup to the folder used in the past. Roon will not let me drill down to the backup folder on the DS that I have use in the past. I can see the parent folder, but when I click on it I get the message “Error loading folder - Unauthorized”. If I try to select a different share on the DS it allows me to drill down to that folder but returns a different message: “Backup failed at [time] / Unable to create backup directory”. I’m not using the NUC yet, this is all on my Lenovo laptop that was used to create backups from in the past.

I am in the only “User” on the NAS and am a member of the Administrators group. I've read about setting up a Network Share but have never needed to do that in the past as I was able to click through DS directories within ROON. I any case I have followed the instructions to create a network share in DSM and add smb capability, but I cannot get roon to recognize the network share.

I have read a lot of articles in the knowledge base about this issue and have tried a number of the recommended solutions with no success.

Describe your network setup

Synology DS has:
3 x 3TB Western Digital Red in a Raid 5 configuration. All my media files are on this share in a share named \Polaris.
1 x 6TB Western Digital Red Pro. This is used for backups of the Media files and several Laptops in a share named \Jupiter. I also created another share named \Echo as a dedicated share for the backup.
1 x Samsung SSD that has the Roon OS in a share called \Prometheus.

Laptop is a Lenovo P17.
Netgear CM1150V - Cable Modem w-Voice
Netgear Nighthawk AX8 - RAX80 Wireless Router
Netgear 15 Port Gigabit Switch - JGS516v2-JGS524v2

No you are not. There are many other users defined on the system (by default). Installing Roon Server on the NAS even created another one. From your description, you missed the steps to give that user the needed access rights.

That is completely normal for DSM 7.x as third-party apps no longer have the rights to mount shares. But as it seems from your description that you want to save the backup on the NAS Roon Server runs on, you don’t need that. Just select the desired backup location from Roon’s location selector after you gave it the needed access rights for Roon Server.

Hello @S_Murphy,

Thank you for reaching Roon support!

As mentioned @BlackJack, since Roon is installed directly on your Synology NAS, it’s important to note that the installation process creates a dedicated RoonServer user account on the NAS. This account runs the Roon Server process and is separate from your personal admin account, even if you’re the only visible user.

If you’re receiving “Unauthorized” or “Unable to create backup directory” errors when selecting backup folders, it’s likely that the RoonServer user does not have read/write permissions to the selected shared folders.

1. Check and Grant Permissions to the RoonServer User

  1. Log in to DSM and open Control Panel > Shared Folder.
  2. Right-click the folder you want to use for Roon backups (e.g., Echo, Jupiter, or Polaris) and choose Edit.
  3. Go to the Permissions tab.
  4. Look for the user named RoonServer in the list.
  5. Make sure the RoonServer user has Read/Write access to the backup folder.
  6. Click Apply or OK to save changes.

Hawe you tried to perform the backup in the same folder as before ?

Thank You BlackJack. This fixed the issue.
