Unable to use Samsung TV as Roon Display from MacMini (ref#OJXGC3)

What’s happening?

· Something’s not working in the Roon interface (buttons, displays, lyrics, etc.)

Describe the issue

Hi,
I need your help. I have now tried for hours and I can’t get my Samsung TV to work as a display again. I am using a MacMini as server, and done so for many years, and displays the music info on my Samsung TV. For what ever reason it just stopped working. What is the URL to use? I have tried multiple different ones like http://127.0.0.1:9330/display/ it doesn’t work.

Thanks in advance, Anders

Hey @hultmana,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your issue with us!

To confirm, did you complete the second step after copying+pasting the webURL? Once you have the browser open to your server’s Display URL, it will appear just like any Chromecast device in the Displays menu.

Here is more info around Displays:

Let me know if this helps! :raising_hands:

Hi Benjamin, the problem is that it doesn’t recognize the URL and therefore not take me to the second step

Hi @hultmana,

Is the Samsung TV listed as a Display in Roon Settings → Displays?

Can you please share a screenshot of the page where you’re stuck?

If you enter the URL from Roon Settings → Displays → Web Displays into any standard browser (Chrome, Safari) on another device (like a laptop or tablet or phone), what happens?

We’ll watch for a response.

Hi @hultmana,

Pinging this thread to ensure you saw my response above. We’ll need the requested information to proceed with troubleshooting.

Thanks!

Hi Conner,
The Samsung TV do not recognize/accept http://127.0.0.1:9330/display/ URL and therefore there no Samsung TV listed as a Display in Roon Settings → Displays.

There are no other displays listed as well.

When enter http://127.0.0.1:9330/display/ on my MacMini it is listed as a display in Roon Settings → Displays and I can activate it, all works as suposed. But my Samsung TV that I have used for years do not accept the URL code.

I have made sure the TV SW is up-to-date and I have had the power cord unplugged for minutes but still doesn’t work. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi @hultmana,

As a next step in troubleshooting, are you able to set up a simplified network connection, and get a direct ethernet connection from your TV to your primary router, as well as your Roon Server?

Let me know if that changes any behavior. Thank you! :raising_hands:

Hi Benjamin,
I connected the Samsung TV with an ethernet cable, the Roon server sitting next to my modem has always been connected via a ethernet cable. After have connected the TV via the cable to the router the URL address showing on the Roon Server (MacMini) was http://127.0.0.1:1930/display/ . Enter that URL on the TV browser I got the message: Server Not Found. But when looking on my Roon Remote (MacBook Pro) that was connected via WiFi to the router I saw another URL address http://10.0.0.62:9330/display/ which I entered on the TV browser and suddenly everything worked as it should. I have now disconnected the TV from the ethernet cable and is now connected via WiFi and all works as it should. However it puzzles me that the URL addresses showing on the server and the remote are still the same as before: Server 127.0.0.1 and Remote 10.0.0.62. Why are they different and why is it the Remote URL that works and not the Server URL? Thanks, Anders

The IP address of 127.0.0.1 is known as a Loopback address - and would never have worked on anything other than your Mac Mini. As you have discovered, you need to use the real IP address of your Mac Mini in web browsers running on other devices. I don’t know why Roon suggested that you use the Loopback address. @benjamin - is this a bug?

Hello @hultmana,

Great troubleshooting — and thank you @Geoff_Coupe for the accurate explanation.

You’re absolutely right, 127.0.0.1 is a loopback address that refers only to the local device (in this case, your Mac Mini). That’s why the display worked there, but not on the TV. When accessing the Display from another device, you’ll need to use the local network IP of your Roon Core (for example, 10.0.0.62:9330/display/).

I’ve shared this behavior internally with our team so we can review why the loopback address might appear in some cases in Roon Settings → Displays, instead of the local IP.

We’re glad to hear everything is working again, and appreciate you sharing your findings — it will definitely help others facing the same issue.

Hello, Thank you all involved helping out with this issue, great support!!
