Understanding metadata via the Library drive / Backups

I have a Nucleus One as my Roon server. I have an external USB Library drive with my files.

For data redundancy, I have two additional drives with the same files as the Library drive. I rotate these three drives on the Nucleus to equalize wear. So, to avoid confusion - I have three external drives with the same music files. The files are synchronized using Chronosync. Only one of the three drives is attached to the Nucleus at a time.

I use Roon to modify metadata. So when I add artwork, for example, I’m actually modifying only ONE of the three drives (and in the Roon index). After modification, I do a Roon backup.

I don’t want to continuously copy the files from one drive to another because I have changed the metadata in Roon. I don’t know if Roon stores metadata on the drive with the files - I’d guess not, or else Roon wouldn’t need to have backups - it could just reindex the files & have all the metadata.

So, I’m assuming that Roon stores album art, for example, in a separate folder somewhere. But I have no idea where that folder lives.
It could be on the Library drive with the files?
It could be on the machine that hosts the Roon server (in my case, the Nucleus)?
It could be on the machine you use to edit the metadata (in my case, the Mac mini)?
I’d like for the metadata to be stored on the Library drive (preferably in the file folders), but I find no such file there.

I think that the way to avoid copying all files from drive to drive after I make changes is to synchronize the files, and then tell Roon to restore a backup? The backup may have the data on what metadata applies to what file? But since Roon seems to automatically begin reindexing files as soon as any change to the Library drive occurs, I may need to restore the backup first and then add the files? I don’t know.

I’ve tried finding this info on Roon’s website, but so far, I’ve failed. Anyone know the answers?

Thanks!

Roon never stores metadata in the music files themselves. All metadata is held in the Roon database - and that includes album art.
