Hi. I have a question about how my Roon is working. It is not something that I am complaining about, just something I'd like to understand. I have a DIY Roon Nucleus built by a crazy computer wiz that is ridiculously good. I also have a Euphony PTS that was too old to update, so I turned it into a Roon Core and Roon Streamer as I have Roon OS on a flash drive. I don't use it as a core, but solely as a streamer. I have 3 end points. All 3 are hooked into my PTS as my streamer and my NUC only has a 4tb SSD plugged into it. The NUC is my core and set up through the optimized core kit. The IP address matches and all is well. Now my question...
Describe your network setup
Sorry, I hit enter without finishing thinking I would get a line break, but missed hitting shift, so gonna start again. I have a streamer and Roon NUC10 that both have Roon OS on them. They could both act as a Roon Core, but I use my NUC10 as my core, and my streamer (Euphony PTS turned into a Roon device) where all three end points are plugged into. I only have a 4tb SSD plugged into my NUC10 which acts as my core hooked up through the optimized core kit. Yet, in the settings when I go to audio Roon doesn't even recognize my PTS as a streamer. Everything goes straight to the NUC10 as end points. Now, I am not complaining, I actually think the sound is even better the way it is working. I just want to understand why it is doing this. Everything is hooked up via Ethernet and I use a Trendnet Green Ethernet Switch that was recommended to me by small green computer as the best ethernet switch any sane person really needs. Nonetheless, I am not looking for anything to change, just want to understand why everything is showing through my NUC10 and the optimized core kit and that Roon doesn't even show my PTS as a streamer where everything is actually plugged into. Please don't change anything on my side, I love the way it sounds. The sound is more liquid, with greater tonal density. I actually a/b'd my NUC10 against the Grimm MU1 and there was no difference in the way my system sounded. This NUC10 was built by a computer wiz and is ridiculously good. Or I would be buying your Titan. As long as things stay sounding as they do I won't make a single change to my chain. Can you help me understand why it is working this way? Thank you, Geoff. I am a 7 yr Roon user and will never use anything else. EVER!
Thank you so much for setting me straight. This is exact reason why I don’t use Roon’s chat. These types of answers. Do you feel good making someone else feel bad? I hope you do…
As for my question, Roon just disregard it. I am good and will continue on. And yes, it doesn’t say core, it is just a term I’ve been using for years. It is optimized core kit.
Disregard my post. I don’t need the help or the answer I seek. I will just accept it for what it is.
@Geoffrey_Alter I moved your posts to the Tinkering section as it seems 1) this may not need Roon technical support at this time and 2) this configuration appears to be an unsupported one based on your description.
Other users may be able to provide ideas and suggestions and if Roon Technical Support is required, we can move it back to Support at the approrpriate time.
There’s definitely some confused language here, as @Jim_F points out (I don’t regard basic corrective facts as mean, personally!)
The Euphony PTS does not appear to be Roon Ready/Tested, so after reading your details I’m curious what your system is actually doing. If it is not Roon Ready or Roon Tested it would not appear on the Settings > Audio panel. Now, in 2017 certification was loose, so it may have been RAAT at that time, but then that capability would have disappeared later unless the PTS was never updated, perhaps?
Another possibility is that the PTS is running Roon Server and the NUC might only be a file server in this architecture, with the PTS connecting directly to your endpoints. In that case, you should see under Settings > Audio something like:
With the various endpoint devices shown as “connected.” You can tell if the PTS is the server if your system still works without the NUC in the configuration. I’d be surprised if the PTS could be a transparent pass-through device for your endpoints, but if they are all ethernet devices, I suppose that might work and the PTS is doing nothing more than being a switch?
Now, the other claims about sound quality don’t much apply to most streamer/server interactions since they are just delivering bits to the endpoints and could be jettisoned from this query for clarity . As are the ethernet switch and NUC build details.
Hope this helps refine your quest! I’d be curious if there are other PTS owners and their experiences?
Thank you for your informative response. The PTS never got Roon Certified before they discontinued it and it couldn’t be updated so I turned it into a Roon Streamer. It can act as a Roon Optimized Core Kit but I only use it as a streamer.
What you say makes sense but everything shows up under my NUC10 in the optimized Core Kit.
While I hear you about sound, it actually listens with more liquidity and tonal density and a quieter background. I attribute this to the quality of the PTS which while older has incredible components and is a wonderful product. It was either gonna sit in a box unused or I could do what I did and turn it into something usable. I also added 12gb of Ram to the PTS giving it 16gb, same as my NUC10 which while not an official Roon Nucleus works incredibly well and hooks easily straight to the optimized core kit. No complaints, but thank you because you explained why the PTS doesn’t show. Plus, I can’t complain about the sound of my system. Maybe at some point I will change it up, but my ethernet switch is holding all of my network connections and I use Google Fiber in a house with incredible insulation and I have LPS’s on everything and two conditioners too. Like I said, thank you for your response and I will continue on. I will never use anything but Roon. 7 yrs and counting.
What is actually plugged into PTS looking at this hardware its just a PC with one network port so only takes USB output to a DAC and possibly HDMI. So I assume you have a DAC connected to it somehow ? Is this not being seen in Roon on your NuC. If it is then the PTS is being seen by Roon.
If you installed RoonOn on the PTS can you login into it via its webpage and verify its ip address compared to that of the NUC.
Please post a screen grab of your audio devices seen in Roon so we can see what you see as this might shed some light on it.
