Unidentified albums fail to pull album artwork when identified manually [Ticket In]

In Roon settings on your local device, there is a button to clear local (image?) cache.
Click on it to refresh your images. That should do the trick.

Thank you so much. I did find the button and cleared the cache. Twice. But still no cigar.

By the way, I imported another CD aftewards, and the artwork was imported just fine.

Hello @Theodore_ECONOMOU,

Thank you for trying the cache clear first! Since that didn’t resolve the issue and your other recent imports are working perfectly, it indicates a metadata preference conflict specific to this one album.

Here is how to manually force Roon to display the artwork that yu want:

  1. Go to the main page of the album with the missing artwork.
  2. Click the three dots () next to the Play buttons and select Edit.
  3. In the Album Editor window, click on the Metadata Preference tab.
  4. Scroll down to the Artwork row and change the selection to Prefer file. (Note: If it is already set to “Prefer file”, try toggling it to “Prefer Roon” or “Prefer best”).
  5. Click Save.

This manual override tells Roon exactly where to pull the image from and should force the cover art to populate on your screen. Let us know if that brings the artwork back!

Thank you very much dear @vadim . Followed your instructions, but no impact :(. very weird. Thank for offering your advice. Best wishes, Theodore

Hello @tripleCrotchet,

Thank you for the detailed screenshots. To help us investigate further, could you please check the following and share what you see?

  1. Go to the album → three-dot menu → EditMetadata Preference — what is selected under Artwork? (Prefer Roon / Prefer file / Prefer best)
  2. Go to Settings → General — is Allow for more covers and photos enabled or disabled?
This will help us understand whether the issue is related to your artwork preference settings or something else entirely.

Hi,

I am experiencing a persistent issue with album artwork not being retained after identifying albums.

Setup:

  • Roon Server 2.67 (build 1661) on Mac Mini

  • Music files: FLAC on QNAP TS-453A NAS via SMB

  • All import settings set to “Prefer Roon”

The issue: When I identify an album, Roon correctly shows the artwork during the identification process. After clicking Save, the artwork is not applied. When I go to Edit Album → Metadata Preferences → Artwork, the “Prefer Roon” option shows “No image” — meaning Roon is not downloading and saving the artwork from its own database to the local library.

This happens consistently across many albums. The cover.jpg in the album folder is correct, but “Prefer file” picks up the wrong embedded artwork from the FLAC files instead.

This worked correctly before — the issue started after reinstalling Roon on a new Mac Mini.

Is there a known fix or workaround other than adding artwork manually for each album?

Thank you.

@vadim Thanks for responding.

To point 2, I have “allow more covers and photos” disabled.

To point 1. I very rarely set metadata preferences at an individual album level. So in general, at an individual album level (as in this case), no metadata preferences of any kind are set. If you meant how are my global import settings for artwork set then that is “prefer file”:

This case is a Qobuz album. It’s not exhaustive but I have just checked a few random local albums and album art is preserved when choosing different identifications to the default. So on the face of it this behaviour is confined to Qobuz/streaming albums.

To add further context. The reason this has come up is that I am slowly going through about 1,000 “unavailable” Qobuz albums that became available from the recent Qobuz database reset. Probably 25% of them need a manual re-identification different to the roon auto-identification default and no album art is being applied.

Hello @Matteo_Brignoli @Theodore_ECONOMOU

It might be helpful to have the file(s) for testing on our end as well, can please upload them here and let us know?

Hi @tripleCrotchet,

Thank you for the detailed report and screenshots — this is very clear and helpful.

We’d like to take a closer look at this on our end. It would be very helpful if you could share your Roon database with us so our team can investigate. It should only take a couple of minutes:

  1. Find your database location.
  2. Stop your Roon Server
  3. Zip up your Roon database folder
  4. Submit the .zip file through our Database Issues portal

Thank you!

I cannot follow those instructions. %localappdata% has 3 roon directories all of which have database sub-folders. Roon, RoonServer, RoonGoer. What exactly do you mean?

Hello @tripleCrotchet

Please zip and attach the RoonServer folder.

That file is uploaded now.

Hello @vadim , and thank you. The issue @Matteo_Brignoli describes is exactly the same I am experiencing. I note that I use Roon ROCK (2.67, build 1661) on a Roon-approved NUC. The NUC is connected via wired Ethernet to my home Router (Swisscom Internet Box 5), via a NetGear Gibabit passive switch.

I have just uploaded the files from the latest CD I ripped and where the bug occurred.

Hi @Theodore_ECONOMOU,

We’re going to merge your report into an identical thread tracking the same issue. Thank you again for reaching out and stand by for more information shortly.
