I am having an issue with the 2 Google Nest Hub Chromecast devices losing their connection to Roon. Sometimes restarting the Roon server will “rediscover” the 2 devices, sometimes it won’t. I’ve also tried rebooting my ASUS router with similar non-deterministic results. Curiously, my Google Nest Audio device’s Chromecast connection is very stable.
All devices are connected to the same network over 5ghz Wifi. I also double checked that all the software/firmware involved are at the latest version.
Thanks for writing in! Sorry to hear you’re having issues with your Chromecast devices.
There could be a handful of reasons you’re experiencing poor connectivity with your Chromecast devices. I have a few follow up questions for you:
When the disconnects occur, are there other wifi devices active in your network? We could be seeing an after-effect due to interference from other Wi-Fi networks or devices.
Do you have any access points within a mesh network that they are communicating with? Based on your description, it could also be a situation with devices frequently switching between access points.
What is the DHCP lease time for your network? If your router’s lease time is short, devices might frequently change IP addresses, causing disconnections.
Multicast - can you check your router settings to see if multicast is enabled? Both Roon and Google Cast rely heavily on multicast protocols for device discovery and communication.
Lastly, if you’re able to temporarily setup a direct ethernet connection from one of the Nest devices as well as your Roon Server machine to your primary router, that would be a good troubleshooting step.
Hi @benjamin,
Thanks for the quick reply. To answer your questions:
It actually seems to be the opposite. During the few times I’ve been able to get the Hub devices working, I was able to play music for hours, during which other members of the household were browsing, streaming, etc. However, when I’d wake up in the morning, the Hub devices would be missing.
It certainly could be. I have a mesh of ZenWiFi Pro ET12s configured in AP mode for the network that all my Wifi devices connect to. I’ll try playing around with binding the Google devices to the same node that my Roon server is directly connected to.
1 week
I looked everywhere in my router’s admin console, but unfortunately, I didn’t see any multicast settings (at least in AP mode)
I certainly understand the value of a direct ethernet connection to troubleshoot, but unfortunately, the Google devices are Wifi-only. One other piece of information for you: I did a factory reset of all the Google devices, but the issue still occurs.
Personally, I keep wondering why this only effects the two Hub devices and not the Audio device. I’ve never had issues with my Google Audio device - it’s always worked seamlessly with Roon. Perhaps a compatible issue with the Hub? Of course, I could be totally wrong.
A bit of an update: I bound all 3 Google devices to the same mesh node that my server is directly connected to. I restarted my Roon server and now all 3 devices are connected to Roon. I’ll check again in the AM and let you know if they remain connected.
Another update for you. All three Google devices were working just fine last night, but when I opened Roon this AM the two Google Hub devices have disappeared again. I double checked that all three devices are still bound to the mesh node that my Roon server is directly connected to.
I’ve activated diagnostics mode for your account to try to get more information on the issue. Looking over your logging, it looks like your cast zone just suddenly drops off:
[5702] 11/23 02:13:39 Info: [Broker:Transport] [cast] lost device CastDevice[DeviceId=Google-Nest-Hub-0d9b21b6d011d6629e18d122dbc0bd59._googlecast._tcp.local, Name=Google Nest Hub, Address=10.1.10.17] because we got a TTL=0 mDNS packet
[5703] 11/23 02:13:39 Info: [Broker:Transport] [transport/zonedisplay] Zone display unregistered: CastDevice[DeviceId=Google-Nest-Hub-0d9b21b6d011d6629e18d122dbc0bd59._googlecast._tcp.local, Name=Google Nest Hub, Address=10.1.10.17]
Looking over the logs further, it looks like there are a few other networking issues on your Roon Server - you are getting dropouts on your iPhone playback, Roon is having errors getting a response when trying to update the system time, TIDAL login errors, live radio location error.
This all suggests that there is something deeper going on and there’s a general networking stability issue. I would focus on simplifying the network, what happens if you move your Roon Server closer and have all but one AP unplugged?
