I have been running my library – 3000+ library and Qobuz – through an AVR. HDMI from my Nucleus for Multi-Channel and 2.1 through a Schiit Gungnir MB (with the new Unison usb upgrade) to analog input on the back of the Yamaha.
It works fine, but I felt I was missing something in 2.1 playback.
I purchased a Cambridge Audio CAX61 Integrated Amp. The difference is clearly audible. Much cleaner, vocals are more specific and seem higher in the mix. New details emerge. Just what I hoped for. The new amp is but 60wp, but my speakers don’t require a lot of wattage. It is also Roon Tested and immediately recognized by my Nucleus.
This week I am adding a speaker switch that allows me to run my Klipsch RF7s on both systems with a click of a switch. I contacted SVS and got useful advice on how to connect both amps to my sub.
The built-in ESS DAC sounds fine to me, and the upgraded SQ means I will soon have a good DAC fo sale.
I though there was something wrong with my 73 year old ears. Turns out I just needed a better amp. Love this hobby.
