if i upsample by going to 192 in the custom part of sample rate conversion how do i know it’s actually upsampling

If you are looking to validate that Roon is following through, some DACs display the sample rate they are receiving from their input.

Look at the signal path, the little coloured icon when playing music.

(This shows a zone which is NOT upsampling, btw)
A decent DAC also shows what sample rate it is receiving, doesn’t yours?

appreciate the response, so then after hitting 192 in the custom area it is technically not upsampling. so how do I get it to upsample? Using a Roon Arc on a Mac with a Fiio K7 Mac

It seems counter intuitive to use Roon ARC, use Roon Remote on your Mac, to control both upsampling and audio endpoints.
Make sure you use Core Audio output in exclusive mode, otherwise you are at the mercy of your Mac’s audio/midi settings.

sorry about the mistake, it is Roon core. I am using core audio in exclusive mode. I get the purple dot, am I not supposed to see 192 in the source description.

No, the source part needs to tell what material you are working with. Below the various modifications to the audio stream are exposed.
The upsampling part is shown in my screenshot right before “Bitdepth conversion”…
