Describe the issue

Directly connected external(USB-C) storage is not available.

Describe your network setup

Not relevant, directly attached via USB-C

Just to add what was happening. Music was playing. Paused it. Restart and tracks flew by onscreen with a message about the audio track was loading too slow. I went to investigate and discovered the drive not available.

I powered off the ROCK, removed the external drive and mounted on my Mac. I ran diskutils on it with no issues reported. I reattached it to the ROCK. Roon still could not see it.

From my Mac, I made a SMB connection to ROCK and that was successful but the storage directory was completely empty. Other directories where there.

ROCK is running 2.55 (build 1559) and OS is version 2.1 (build271)

What file system are you using with the drive?

ExFAT, no containers.

Have you tried editing the folder, and browsing to the drive? Typically, the drive label is the model of the drive, e.g., CrucialX6.

Ok, this has just gotten stranger. Trying to think back to when it last worked and what changed. What changed is that I grouped two outputs together. Both are streaming to “Roon Ready” devices that have not caused issues in the past.

One is a WiimPro that feeds a DAC and beyond.

The other is an Eversolo A-8 and feeds it’s internal DAC and beyond.

Since this too was working, now I have to figure out which path is causing issues and my question to the community is how could changes in outputs generate what appear to be errors in input? Audio file loading too slowly?

Since it is a ROCK, I do not have local access to the FS but I can reach it and edit it via SMB remotely.

What happens if you use the “3 dots” menu on Roon’s Storage screen (:gear: > Storage) and choose Edit? Can you reattach the MusicMaster drive as the Watched Folder?

As @Geoff_Coupe, suggests, I was also referring to the Roon app.

Hi @mjw and @Geoff_Coupe. From within the Roon App, I have edit ability under the three dots. All the music is visible. Additionally, in the Roon app and via the folders menu item I can see everything.

You might have missed it to my other post in this threed this morning but it does not appear to be a file system issue. When I get the errors on loading files, it’s not on input as one would assume. Rather, it is on output,

From my prior posts in this thread. It was working fine until yesterday so what changed since I said I paused the music that was playing fine and then restarted it and had the problems. Well, why did I pause it in the first place? I wanted to add another zone (in Roon, group) to what was playing via RAAT to the WiiM Pro zone. I added the Eversolo zone via RAAT to create the group. That was when the problem because evident.

So to recap:
Everything has worked in the past with no known changes to the audio paths.
As of yesterday (or some time before yesterday), something changed on the Eversolo side (firmware Update?). It was not noticed until I added the Eversolo side to the playing zone.

When I remove the Eversolo from the group, everything plays fine.
When I try to use the Eversolo path alone, this error appears.

Sooooo, I don’t know what but something changed in the way Eversolo and ROCK communicate via RAAT. Any RAAT SMEs out there? I have logs but not enough karma I guess to post them.

Thanks for this - it does seem a very odd issue. Something for the Support team to pick up after the weekend. Hopefully they can pull logs from your system to diagnose the issue further.

Has this error gone away?

If so, then it would seem that something else is at play, and Roon support can have a look at the logs.

Good day @Don_Kendrick !

I hope you’re doing well today.

We have reviewed the logs and could clearly see that your disk could not be attached to the ROCK and marks as DriveNotReady .

We would recommend you to try to change the cable connector first.

Then connect it to the other PC and check the health of the disk and format it again to exFAT . But do not forget please to backup your music.

Let us know please whether that’s gonna work.

Have a nice day!

Regards.

Hi @alex_h @mjw @Geoff_Coupe,

Sorry for the delay. As it turns out, it’s an Eversolo issue and not a Roon problem at all although I really must as Roon to fix their error messages to be more descriptive. We all wasted time looking at the wrong end of the path.

To show how important better errors messages are, let me give you a post mortem of what happened starting with a timeline.

I get these audio tracks loading too slowly error messages. By itself, that sounds like an input issue.

My music files are on an external USB drive attached to ROCK. However, I have the exact same files on a backup twin of the hard drive. First step in troubleshooting, I power down the ROCK, swap drives, and power back up. That is where I do not see /DATA or any music and @alex_h sees DriveNotReady. I knew that was the backup but then forgot to swap back to the original until, thanks @mjw, you questioned me on the file system. The right drive was ExFAT but the backup was Apple’s formatting.

So I got all that correct but still had the issue until I ungrouped the two RAAT destinations. That pointed squarely to Eversolo as the problem and when I looked into the RAAT logs, I see the following:

0/26 15:18:00 [Local 10/26 11:18:00] Trace: [zone Eversolo] PlayPause

10/26 15:18:11 [Local 10/26 11:18`

Breaking it down it says:

10/26 15:18:00 [Local 10/26 11:18:00] Trace: [Eversolo] [Lossless, 24/192 FLAC => 24/192] [100% buf] [LOADING @ 0:00] I Just Want To Celebrate - Rare Earth

Which, and Alex can confirm, says that Roon is attempting to send the file to Eversolo, it has loaded the file and waiting for Eversolo to accept it. Then we see:

0/26 15:18:05 [Local 10/26 11:18:05] Trace: [zone Eversolo] [zone] no playback for 5s, suspending to release audio device
10/26 15:18:05 [Local 10/26 11:18:05] Info:

SignalPath Quality = Inactive
Elements:
------------------------------------------------------------
10/26 15:18:05 [Local 10/26 11:18:05] Warn: inactive signal path :(

Roon hasn’t heard from Eversolo so it’s marking the path inactive. And then the rest is just shutting down the attempt:

10/26 15:18:05 [Local 10/26 11:18:05] Trace: [Eversolo] [Lossless, 24/192 FLAC => 24/192] [100% buf] [STOPPED @ 0:00] I Just Want To Celebrate - Rare Earthcode here

Resolving this was a quick reboot of Eversolo. Still trying to find out why Eversolo stopped but that’s a question for another forum. Thanks for your help! And Alex, I am serious about please passing on changing the error messages. All I had to do was reboot the destination.

Good day @Don_Kendrick !

Thanks for bringing back to us detailed description.

We’ll consider your input into our future planning of development.

Have a nice day!

Regards.
