USB Connection Issues with Nucleus and Lumin U1 Causing Playback Problems (ref#7NLQ0V)

What best describes your playback issue?

· Music doesn't start when I press "Play"

What type of Zone is affected by this problem?

· *Directly-connected Zones* are affected.

Does the issue affect all file formats?

· The issue affects *multiple/all* file formats.

Does the issue happen with local library music, streaming service music, or both?

· *Only local library *music is affected.

Where is your local content stored?

· On the same machine where RoonServer is running, USB drive

If you move the content from your NAS to a local storage location, do you still experience issues with playback?

· The issue happens for both the NAS storage location and on the secondary storage location

Please try playing content of a lower sample rate (44.1kHz or 48kHz), does this work as expected?

· No, lower sample rates are still affected

Do you have an approximate timestamp of when the issue last occurred?

· It happened regularly in the last months/years.

What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?

· It is NOT about 3rd party devices, it is about Roon and Nucleus ONLY!

Describe the issue

Connecting Nucleus w/USB (OWC-4TB) over Lumin U1 transport causes Roon NOT to play music. Connecting the USB drive directly to Lumin U1 plays wonderful.
Exchanging OWC-USB to Kingston USB-2TB works for a while but after days same issue occurs.
I'm sure this is about YOUR USB-software-driver in Linux as this happens neither w/Kingston nor with OWC USB units with other devices like Lumin U1, U2, U2-Mini.
Please upgrade YOUR Roon/Nucleus USB driver in a future version!

Describe your network setup

This is not the fault - network is used all over our building WITHOUT any problems!

Hello @roon-user-tin

We have been through your logs. Here is what we can see, and what we still need.

The USB drive is being read correctly. In the period covered, Roon read metadata from 1,893 files on that drive and analyzed them locally. A drive the server could not talk to would not produce that.

The one failure we can see is on the network, not on USB. At 21:08:36 local on 13 August, Roon tried twice to open the audio connection to your Lumin U1 and was refused, then the Lumin dropped the control connection:

connecting to 192.168.2.4:39696
connect failed: Connection refused
LUMIN U1 @ 192.168.2.4:49552 OnDisconnected: BeginRead SocketException(0)

Roon reads the file from the drive and then sends it over your network to the Lumin. It is that second step that failed, and a USB drive takes no part in it.

What we need from you is one thing. Nothing at all was played in the eighteen hours our logs cover, so we have no failed attempt to examine other than the one above. Please reproduce the problem once, then post here the same day with the date, the exact local time to the minute, your time zone, and what you were trying to play. Diagnostics are already enabled on your account, and our logs only hold a limited window, so a timestamp sent later usually arrives too late to be useful.

Hello and thank you for the hint.

Let me tell you an issue I recognized and therefore I am not sure if this problem really belongs to my network

If Roon plays music from USB the usb device blinks and tells me „I am reading". When I stop listening and make a pause of a longer period and want to play again, the USB device does nothing. No blinking, no sign of work. The curious thing for me is that Roon indicated playing music by the icon beside the song but time is not showing more than 0:00 and the cursor does not proceed. If I switch to streaming for example from Qobuz the song is played and time shows progress.

So I assumed that Roon is not able to wake up the USB storage device after some time…

Maybe you check this and tell me again waht I have to do and what datat you need to analyze the problem.

Thank you.

Please update Roon Server to the latest. Disconnect the DAC from Lumin. Then power cycle the whole network starting from the router, WiFi mesh, access points, network switches, Nucleus, Lumin, phones and tablets. After Lumin shows a progress circle, power cycle the DAC and reconnect it to Lumin.

If problem persists, check the Lumin and network infrastructure by using Lumin native Tidal Connect or Qobuz Connect. If you have neither account, create a free Spotify account and test Spotify.

Hello @roon-user-tin

To look at the specific event, please reproduce the issue one more time, note the exact timestamp and track name, and update us here.

Thank you. At the time this procedure is too time consuming and I decided to try it later and will respond when done.

Hi @roon-user-tin,

No worries, please let us know when you have been able to reproduce the issue and we’ll pick this back up then.

Hi @roon-user-tin,

Just checking in on this. Were you able to reproduce the issue on your side yet, or make it happen again in the same way we discussed last time? If so, reply with what you were doing when it happened, and we can pick it back up from there.

Please note, if we don’t hear back from you this thread may close automatically soon. If the thread auto-closes and you need further assistance, please submit a reopen support request via the technical support help form below and specify that the issue should be reopened. Thank you.
