USB Flashdrive Formatting Conundrum

A suggestion if possible: if the backup file won’t run from a flash drive due to a formatting error, might a Roon ROCK (in my case NUC) provide a formatting error message accordingly?
When the problem occurred, I contacted my favorite AI and “we played” modifying several file paths. This obviously didn’t work. Finally, formatting was mentioned.

Originally, I had grabbed an old, empty flash drive to use as a copying medium, not paying attention, or even considering its formating. Finally recognizing that changing its format from FAT32 to exFAT may be the solution – problem solved!! But not after >hour of trying different path configurations, shutting down the NUC & turning it back on each time…making other copies thinking the copy may have been corrupted etc. An error message would have nicely alleviated those previous for naught efforts.

FAT32 is explicitly listed as a supported file system for media storage, so I’d be surprised if it doesn’t work for backups. If so, the backup documentation should mention this (it doesn’t), and yes maybe a warning in the application may be useful.

However, I doubt it. Did you rule out that the file system or partition was simply damaged by re-formatting as FAT32 and trying the backup again?

No, I didn’t rule that variable-out. It sure could have been a problem.

However, my problems began when I moved from an Ext.20TB to a 24TB drive:

Roon’s library on an Ext.20TB HD was copied to a Ext.24TB
HD.

Windows FastCopy did the copying
with verify. All tracks were “verified”.
The old HD was deleted from the NUC.
The new HD was added.
Playlists were inaccurate.
The back-up done (just before the 20TB HD’s removal) was restored via a Ext.5TB HD.
The 5TB HD was NOT “Added” to Roon.
The BkUp folder was selected for the restore.
However, the 5TB HD did have some music tracks on it. Apparently those tracks started being loaded into Roon.
I stopped the loading process by “disabling” the 5TB HD and disconnected the HD.
Added the 24HD added to Roon, sans other HD’s being connected, about 24hrs. later, the following was found:

Settings>Library<Throttled:
Stuck for over 12-hrs. at “analyzing 1219/1220”

Settings>Library>Clean Up:
“18,080 files that are not associated with a storage
location.” “These files are unavailable because
the storage location that they were associated no longer exists.”

Settings>Storage:
“Roon will monitor folders for new music.” “Your files are left in the folder and won’t
be copied or modified in any way, unless you explicitly choose to add or delete
them from your library.”

“Watching for new files in real time.”
“282,438 tracks imported”
Track Count’s Main Menu:
Track Count = 279014

That’s when I took the database back to ground zero and went from there. And why I grabbed an empty flashdrive to copy the backup to (from the 5TB USB SSD); making sure that there were NO ancillary files on the flashdrive.

But after all this:

I ended up with a: “Roon Server Software” “Missing Codecs” message on the Rock/Local screen. >Operating System is OK however.

>And even with the Library Drive disconnected, the “Missing Codec” message remains.
As long as Roon is running as good as it is, if it ain’t broke (well, you know :slightly_smiling_face: ). I’m unconcerned with the message. But do wonder if my NUC’s Samsung SSD is in a bit of a questionable situation?!? So, I’m auto backing-up regularly.

I don’t know but I guess with your database troubles backups can fail for all kinds of reasons. I wouldn’t put it on the FAT32 just yet

There was, however, a general temporary error like this a few days ago. Might be unrelated to your other trouble. This was fixed. Here’s one example of a few threads that popped up around that time:

Possible, I guess
