Using my MacBook in a different room from my Mac mini

I am sure this question has been asked and answered, so I apologize in advance. I have Roon set up in my theatre room upstairs on a Mac Mini. It is connected to ethernet. I use Roon through a DAC attached via USB. I recently purchased a MacBook which I use downstairs for work, which is using wifi. I have the Roon app installed on the MacBook, but I am unable to stream music from the Roon to the MacBook (I’m assuming via Airplay). The MacBook does not appear on the devices. I previously used a second Mac mini in my garage and was able to stream to it without issue. Currently running Sequoia 15.3.2. Not sure if this is caused by an OS update issue, or if I am slowly or quickly losing my ability to trouble shoot these issues. Thank you in advance.

Hi @Robert_Chatfield,

Thank you for your post. If you’re hoping to use Airplay to stream from the Mac Mini to the Macbook, but you’re not seeing the Macbook in the list of Airplay Zones, then we’ll want to troubleshoot Airplay device announcement on this network.

First, verify that the Macbook has a Fixed (not a rotating) WiFi Address assigned in the WiFi details page.

Second, in MacOS System Settings on both machines, navigate to Privacy & Security and verify that local network access is toggled on for Roon.

Then restart RoonServer or refresh the Settings → Audio page in Roon.

If you don’t see the Zone at this point, then please respond with a basic overview of how the router and any access points or mesh nodes are connected to the two computers involved.

We’ll watch for your response. Thanks!

Checked all of the settings and everything is set correctly. The router is connected to the Mac mini via ethernet. The MacBook Pro is using wifi. Thank you for your help

Hi @Robert_Chatfield,
Thanks for letting us know. I requested another diagnostics report from your server but it didn’t go through. Can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs from both your server and your MacBook to our File Uploader? Let us know once you’ve uploaded them and we’ll take a look. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

Ok, maybe I’m missing something, or just stupid, but I can’t find the log files. If I leave the Mini server on will you be able to access the diagnostics? I will go upstairs on turn it on just in case. I really appreciate the help

@Robert_Chatfield do you leave your mini running Roon Server turned on all the time or do you power it down? Roon requires Roon Server to be on when used by any Roon Remote device such as your MacBook. If the mini is on, does your MacBook use a VPN for connecting to your work network?

The Mini is not left on full time, and is powered down when not in use. It has been on when I’ve been trying to access it from the MacBook. I can see it on the MacBook. In fact I can play music on the Mini controlling it with the MacBook. It plays through the speakers in the Mini.

@Robert_Chatfield Roon Support will need you leave on the mini so they can examine its logs. On the MacBook, can you post a screensot of your Roon’s Settings → Audio page with the mini and MacBook on?

Ok, the Mini is on & running Roon. I have included the picture of the MacBook screen …

What version of Roon are you running on the mini and MacBook? It does not appear that Roon Remote on your MacBook is visible to the mini as a native Roon endpoint. This is similar to seeing my wife’s MB Pro as an AirPlay Roon endpoint option even though she does not have Roon installed on it. This may indicate a mismatch between versions of Roon, or Roon is not enabled through your MB’s network connection.

Both are running 2.48 (build 1517). The network setting on the MacBook is on to allow Roon. A quick side note. The mini I have in my shop, that does appear as a device won’t play. I attempt to play a song, the blue “ball” bounces back & forth and then stops with the play button reappearing. Should I continue to leave my Mini (Roon Server) on? I wasn’t sure how long it takes for them to access the log files. I really appreciate all of your help

Hi @Robert_Chatfield,
It looks like we weren’t able to pull logs automatically from your server. Try leaving it on for a few hours just to be safe. If we still can’t access the logs after that than something else may be blocking the request. Let us know when we should check again to see if the logs have come through.

It’s been on for a couple days. Let me know if there is something else I can do on my end. Thanks for the help

Hi @Robert_Chatfield,

Thank you for your patience. We’ve successfully gathered all the logging request from the relevant machines.

We see RoonServer and the affected MacBook discover one another via device discovery (broadcast/multicast), but the actual handshake between the two machines fails. Specifically, RoonServer’s ARP can’t find a layer-two address for the MacBook’s IP.

What is the network pathway between the Mac Mini and the MacBook in the second room? Do you have any managed switches or mesh nodes in between them? Specifically, we’re curious about enterprise-grade components or mesh nodes that might restrict multicast traffic (anything “managed”).
