Using my MacBook in a different room from my Mac mini

Hi @Robert_Chatfield,

Thanks for the update!

For Bluetooth, first set the Bluetooth device as the system output of your Mac (completely outside of Roon) and then within Roon, set your audio zone as the system output of the Mac - that should allow you playback via your Bluetooth device.

Could you reproduce this and share the track name? We’re having a hard time connecting to the machine to review a fresh diagnostic report. Thank you, Robert!

Ok, not sure what I’ve done, but somehow I’ve gone backwards. The MacBook is now not showing up. I got the notice that there was an update before trying the Bluetooth speaker. I clicked update all so I’m hoping it updated the server as well. As far as the second MacMini that is a low priority. It that has to “take one for the team” I’m ok with that

Hi @Robert_Chatfield ,

Have you tried rebooting the Modem/Router unit yet? If not, I would suggest unplugging, waiting 30s then plugging back in to see if it helps. Just to confirm, you don’t have any VPNs or additional firewalls on the Macs that could be impacting this issue?

Ok, I have rebooted the router. Once again I can select the MacBook, but still can’t get it play through my bluetooth Klipsch. The Klipsch is set as the system output in the settings - all other sounds play through the Klipsch, so I believe that is set up correctly

Hey @Robert_Chatfield,

Thanks for the update!

So as it stands, you’re using your Macbook as a remote, to play music from your Roon Server hosted on your Macmini.

Could you please share a screenshot of your audio settings from the Macbook? Including your enabled zone would be helpful too. Thank you!

I truly appreciate the ongoing support. Here are the pics you requested. Thanks again

Hey @Robert_Chatfield,

Thanks for the screenshots! Can you also confirm the Klipsch are connected via the bluetooth dropdown in your mac Task bar? Like the below:

Thank you again

Thanks @Robert_Chatfield!

Apologies if I’ve glazed over this - but what gear do you have between your Mac and the Klipsch?

With that, when you have your zone enabled and selected in Roon - if you click at the volume icon>cogwheel>device setup> what are your volume control settings set to? Can you test out both Device volume as well as Fixed volume?

Thank you!

There is nothing between the MacBook and the Klipsch. I have the Klipsch connected via bluetooth and have the Klipsch set as the system output as well.

Hope these are the correct setting that you asked for me to check. Thanks again

Hi @Robert_Chatfield,

Thanks for the screenshots! Those are indeed the correct settings - were you able to test both/either private zone as well as exclusive mode? Do either help?

I am beyond confused. I updated Roon when I got the message that it needed to be updated. Now I am back to the MacBook not showing up at all. I tried rebooting my router, as that worked the last time. No luck this time.

Hey @Robert_Chatfield,

Sorry to hear you’re back to having discovery issues with your Macbook! Perhaps a reboot of both your Roon Server and router may help here?

It may also be worth double-checking your mac firewall settings on both machines - if you temporarily disable them, are you able to reconnect?

Let us know! :raised_hands:

Ok, I have the MacBook showing up again and I can select it. Plays normal, but still not playing via Bluetooth, only using the built in speaker. I feel like I am in some weird loop and taking you along for the ride. The help is greatly appreciated

Hey @Robert_Chatfield!

Thanks for the update - see if you bring Roon back online on the Macbook, we’ve set up auto diagnostics to be pulled the next time you open Roon.

This is still the case correct? Other sounds function normally?

On the Macbook having issues, see if the following helps:

  1. Applications → Utilities → Terminal . Type in “sudo killall coreaudiod” and press Enter . This should reset your Core Audio daemon.

Thanks Robert!

All other audio plays through the Klipsch - Apple Music, Nugs on Safari, key strokes, etc.

Tried the Terminal suggestion. Received the message No matching processes were found

Hi @Robert_Chatfield ,

Did you by any chance use Mac Migration Assistant or Time Machine backup to restore one Mac to the other at some point in the past? Or were they completely new Roon installs?

Fresh Roon installs on all of my Macs

Hey @Robert_Chatfield,

Thanks for the update - sorry to hear you’re still running into playback issues! If you could, enable your bluetooth endpoint and attempt playback once more.

Then, share the specific track name you attempted to play, and we’ll take a fresh look at your Roon Server diagnostic report.

Thank you!

I have tried forgetting the Klipsch from the bluetooth settings and reconnect without success. I am trying to listen to The Rolling Stones Flashpoint “Start Me Up” right now. Again, thank you so much for all of the help.
