Utter Frustration with Roon experience – This Needs to Be Addressed

Dear Roon Support,

I’m writing to express my absolute frustration with the constant and recurring issues I face with Roon. This time, my Lyngdorf device has disappeared from the audio zones entirely—again—and nothing I do can resolve it.

What’s worse? This didn’t happen after an update I initiated. It occurred mid-session while I was playing music. Suddenly, without warning or reason, my system broke. This isn’t the first time, and it’s getting harder to justify why I continue to use a system that fails so consistently.

I have spent countless hours over the past months troubleshooting Roon-related problems. Restarting devices, clearing caches, reconfiguring network settings—the same exhausting cycle, over and over again. For a premium service, one would expect things to just work.

Why should I have to dig through forums, submit logs, or jump through hoops every time Roon decides to push yet another update or, worse, mess up mid-playback? I’m not interested in providing logs or answering redundant questions about my setup. The problem isn’t on my end—it’s with Roon’s apparent inability to deliver a stable and reliable experience.

You brand yourselves as a high-end solution for audiophiles, but the reality is this: Roon is becoming more of a headache than it’s worth. If this level of instability continues, I’ll have no choice but to abandon the platform entirely and explore alternatives that value their users’ time.

I sincerely hope you take this feedback seriously and start addressing the root cause of these issues. Your users deserve better than this.

Disappointed and exhausted,
Rune Storkaas

I dont doubt your frustration, but statements like the one above wont help your cause, many of us have been through issues in getting our systems to be suitable to get the most out of Roon.

Asking for help is a liberating experience and leads in many cases to rock solid performance. There are many solid citizens on the forums with a wealth of real world experience.

However, i also believe that Roon is not for everyone, so its up to you to evaluate whether its worth it for you.

I have no doubt you are having issues. To blame Roon is an obvious first route.

I started with Roon about 9 years ago and have had virtually no problems in that time.

So what is the problem?

I can describe my system as you can yours but before i blindly blame the software i look to what I may be doing to cause it or indeed prevent it.

There is a prescribed route on thiz forum with details about how to go about getting support. Have you tried that route first. You may not agree with a forum based support option but that is what we have.

Maybe Roon is not for you but over 300k users think it is. Does that not ring a bell that the issue may be local not global

Tell us your problem and let’s see if any of the “Roon Super Users” can offer some suggestions. @Suedkiez is simply great

Start by Rebooting everything, it often works wonders

Thanks for your feedback Mike!

I mainly blame myself  I have rebooted everything - several times and my Lyngdorf still don’t show up under audio devices.

Same thing happened a few weeks ago after a roon update. I then got it to work again after rebooting everything, but not this time.

Sorry for my frustration…

I will not call myself a Roon Super User, and I’m only in my second year as a mainly Happy User. There are many things I really like about Roon.

Could be the Lyngdorf is a bad match for Roon. I also run my system over wifi and use a MacBook Pro as a Roon Server - I know this is not optimal…

I used to stream from a Bluesoun Node 2i with updated power supply and a Geshelli Labs J2 and XTZ Edge A2-300 to Audio Physic Tempo 3 loudspeakers. Changed everything and now use only the Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 (streamer/dac/amp). (I have a difficult room and chose the Lyngdorf because of their Room Perfect solution - it sounds absolutely great).

With the Bluesound issues were usually solved by rebooting the streamer - no issues with Roon then.

It is deeply frustrating when things don’t work - its like you had to reinstall all apps and add all your contacts on a phone after an update.

Roon is definately worth it - when it works

Hi @Rune_Storkaas,

I understand your frustration, but as others have already said, seeking support from Roon and the community can result in a very good Roon experience.

Therefore, I would urge you to open a support request. The Feedback category is not the place for digging into the detail.

To equip the Roon Technical Support team to assist you directly, please follow this link to provide the details of your case to Technical Support: Technical Support Request

Respond to the prompts there to ensure that you’ve performed basic troubleshooting and to ensure Technical Support has the full details necessary to expedite Technical Support’s investigation into the case. Your responses will auto-generate a Community thread in the appropriate section.

Sorry to say, but that’s not just not optimal!
I’m quite confident, that most of what’s frustrating you today will magically go away, once you’re able to bring yourself to connect your server with an Ethernet cable - and refrain from using power-line adapters, cause Roon advises against those as well!
Good luck!

I wouldn’t rule out the powerline out of hand.
For almost a year I had to move the roon server that was previously connected directly to the router via ethernet and for this reason I opted for the powerline solution (I use Fritz), just as a few months ago I added another 2 powerlines to connect as many endpoints.
All this because the wifi connection was not always reliable and I could have frequent drops.
I am finding everything very stable as if the connection was only ethernet.

With my Roon Server just a few meters and a single room away from my router. Wifi strength indicator was full. And constant transmission speed of 700 mbit/sec. Roon kept suffering from dropouts and track skipping. After connecting my Roon Server to Ethernet, I didn’t suffer a single dropout ever since. And that was over 2 years ago. I reckon the culprit here is living in an apartment block with all the neighbours having their own wifi setups.

Roon is a heavy network user. And the RAAT protocol hardly uses any “reading ahead” options to keep all connected zones synced in real time. So if your network is suffering from interference Roon will start to act up.

My best advice is to get your Roon Server connected to Ethernet. And where possible your endpoints as well. When it comes to my 3 streamers my Cambridge Audio CXN V2 definitely needs Ethernet itself as its wifi dongle is lousy. However my Bluesound Node X and WiiM Ultra happily play on wifi all day.

Appreciated, @Mike_O_Neill . I’m in the middle of an apartment move right now, it’s the worst. The OP is in good hands, so I’ll gladly let this one pass

Moving tbis thread to Roon Software Discussion. @Rune_Storkaas don’t forget to open a Support ticket. Roon can remotely view logs and see things community can’t.

You could have some sort of electrical noise on a line caused by something else?

I’m not sure if you’ve tested before, but try Ethernet. You can get longer cables. Test it out with the server, and see if any of the issues remain. If you can, put it all together near a router and Ethernet the lot and test.

Roon is a little complicated and not very forgiving. If you’re not willing and able to operate within that framework, you might find something that works better for you.

I’ve been using Roon for over 5 years with no problems. I have three Roon servers, three main endpoints, two Roon ARC servers, and stream from Tidal and Qobuz.

Have you looked at the logs, they will set you free.

Roon works great for me, and has for years.

Roon server on Mac will loose all audio zones not directly attached at reboot or update (of Roon or MacOS) This has been the case for some time since Sequoia. It’s a nuisance, so for sure the Macbook is not the best solution for a server. Go to settings - privacy-local network and toggle Roon Server off and on again and re-open Roon. The Lyngdorf will now likely show up again.
Obviously this is not practical to do every time there’s an update or the Mac needs rebooting but at least you will be up and running.

If you have a Mac mini around I would recommend putting the server on that machine or on anything other than a laptop.

Like you Roon has been rock solid for me for years. As far as I am concerned nothing has to be changed. It just flat out works.

I have had all of my zones disappear off an on over several months using a mac mini m2 and iphone.
A restart always solves the issue .

I use a MacBook Pro and wifi and I have no issues

This:

Wifi = Hit and Miss reliability, your server needs an ethernet connection
Wifi = Half Duplex
Wifi = Not Recommended by Roon
Wifi = Expect Problems

You need to address your networking.
If you are going to use Wifi, you can’t blame Roon for your issues, its the first thing you’ll be asked to address.

You could also reboot your entire network, including router, PC’s, endpoints, and any mesh field Waps as a first pass. Check your server is using a static IP, and DNS should be set to Google or similar. Ensure all the basic’s are done - and then seek help.
