Various Artists - how does Roon make them appear in directory

Hi there,

I’ve recently started my trial subscription and am overall well impressed. I’ve got all my music on a NAS which I’ve used so far to directly stream to my Auralic Aries. I’ve used Minimserver running on my NAS to do so.
I’ve got over 100 various artists albums, but although they appear when I look for the title, they do not show up under the “V” in “Artists” view. This is the case when I used the LDS user interface for Auralic and is also how I would prefer them to appear. Is there a setting in either Roon, metadata, other which need to be maintained some how? The Various Artists (and all other artists) are now tagged under “ALBUMARTIST” in metadata.

any advice is well appreciated,

M

Hey @mbraham – the Setting for sorting of albums is on the General tab of Settings. If you set the Sort Compilations To: setting to “Various Artists”, all these albums will show up under V in the Albums browser.

I should also note that “Various Artists” is never shown in the Artist browser, since it’s an album level classification, not a performer.

If you want a quick way to find all these albums, you can tag them or bookmark a focus.

Aha - light dawns… I wondered why I couldn’t see them in the Artist browser…

thank you Mike, that did the trick which enables me to find them. It does however not provide my ideal setup in that I would prefer to see “various artists” show up under the “V” on my albums sorted by artists. In my view, browsing through my music collection through Roon (or any other app) reflect in a way going through albums in a record store. Various artists collections used to be / are typically stored under the V.

I can imagine different people have different preferences and for that reason perhaps both options should be made available under Roon. I can’t imagine that being far fetched to organise - having said that I’m by no means qualified to assume what this would technically take to develop/ implement.

It would add a lot of value to me though as a user of Roon/ as a customer.

thoughts?

Hey @mbraham – glad that worked out!

In Roon, we generally sort albums within an artist by release date, so you can actually see an accurate view of the artist’s career. In collections with a significant number of compilations, this can make it hard to find the album you’re looking for, since it’s easy to jump to Miles Davis by typing M-I but harder to find what you’re looking for if you have 30 pages of comps.

This is why we default to some special handling for Various Artists albums, so you can always jump right to the Pulp Fiction soundtrack by typing P-U-L.

You can override this behavior in Settings > General:
