Various iPhone/iPad connection issues after latest build (1352) [Investigating]

I hope it works well for you but, don’t forget, the Nucleus is just another computer with a different operating system. Some basic knowledge of computers & network configuration are invaluable to keep everything ticking over.

Hi Kevin, I have a Nucleus too and it is a nice simple solution and it has worked more or less flawlessly since I got it.
However the IPad I use as Roon remote has been the issue …having a Nucleus does not help this.

Having the same issues. Tried accessing on Windows, Mac and Ipad, Iphones. Nothing is working. I did open a ticket with support.

Well, for those who are frustrated, and happen to have a spare RPi or linux box on the network and just want to tinker a bit and then just sit back and listen to music instead of app restarting, there is always the amazing roon-tui to experiment with:

I have similar problems since over two months.
But I can report that

  • always the WLAN-connection of my iPad or iPhone disappeared.
  • that this happens very erratically. There are long periods ( many hours ) during which nothing happens and everything works very well, and then there are periods ( a few hours ) in which I have to restart the WLAN function in the iPad or iPhone every 20 to 40 seconds to be able to use Roon.
My impression is that Roon influences the WLAN connectivity of my iPad and iPhone. When I use both outside my home = out of my WLAN and not using Roon, I never have problems with my WLAN connectivity.

My system is an Antipodes Oladra music server which is connected by ethernet cable to my local network

I am having the same issues with ipad pro and my iphone as well as my wife’s iphone. roon hangs and only solution is to delete the app and re-install. It is getting very tiring. I see many people have this issue but not seeing any response from roon; maybe I am missing something?

I assume you are referring to the iPad/iPhone losing the Wifi connection, if i am correct then there is a local WiFi issue not necessarily a Roon problem. It sounds very much like a wifi problem which is affecting Roon not caused by Roon…

@support
Anyone looking into this or can offer any help/guidance.
8 days since the original post.

Here it‘s definitely not a general wifi issue, everything else (websites, email, bluetooth connection to subwoofer, etc.) works just fine, while roon screen wouldn‘t load for several minutes.
A follow up from roon staff would be appreciated.

In my case turning off my Ipad and turning it back on again solves this every time.
I used to have to do this say maybe once per week, now I have to sometimes do this every 20 minutes or so. So yeah making listening to music using Roon a bit of a bind at present.

It’s definitely no general WiFi problem at all for me. Everything is working fine - except Roon is regularly loosing connection to core/server. Shutting down the app and restarting solves it for me for a certain time until it happens again.

I thought of a problem of my WLAN ( Router and Repeater ) causing these problems.
But the problems are highly correlated to the use of Roon.
Maybe it is not Roon, but for me it is in the combination of iOS and Roon.
Running no music => no problems with other apps on the iPhone or iPad.
Newest developments: with iOS 17.1.1. the problem did not occur until now

Obviously not all problems are due to the Router/WiFi but there are very many cases recorded in this community where after much researching the local network has been the source of the problem. Roon is well known to place heavy demands on the network for metadata exchanges & control so it can reveal weaknesses inherent in the local network architecture.

The fact that thousands of iPad/iPhone users enjoy trouble free performance suggests that it is worth investigating all aspects of local network performance. Getting additional support from Roon (which can be frustratingly slow to non-existent) is worth running in parallel so that there is some prospect of achieving a resolution.

Same connection issues with iPhone after the latest Roon updates.

I can only play Roon for maybe 3 minutes until it stops and says loading on the screen. Not word yet on my support ticket.

For me, using an iPad mini 5 as remote and a windows 11 server, what happens is playback continues but the remote app loses connection to the server and controls will not respond until I kill the remote app and restart it. Then the app syncs with whatever is playing and becomes responsive again. This occurs many times daily and never used to until the latest build. I hope this is being investigated as it seems to affect many users .

This exactly happens to me too regularly! It’s also reproducible and this usecase is hopefully unter investigation by Roon. So far though no info/feedback

Hello All,

Thank you for the reports here. We are investigating these reports, but have yet to find any common pattern so far. For those of you impacted, can you please let us know the exact local time + date + Roon remote model that experiences this issue?

Once you provide the timestamps, we will enable diagnostics mode for your Roon Server + Remote to try to see if there are any common patterns in the logging. Please, do let us know this information when possible, thanks!

Hi Noris

Hope your are doing well !

I had issues yesterday evening November 28th. Unfortunately I don’t have the exact timestamp but it was between 21h-22h CET.

My remote is iPad Pro 11” third generation, running iPadOS 17.1.1

Dirk

Hi @noris I have provided multiple timestamps in my thread Issues with Roon Remote 2.0.25
Is logging of server/remote enabled on my account yet?
Note that this issue has greatly decreased the user experience to the point that I have to restart Roon Remote many many times a day. This is not pleasant.

Remote is iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) on iOS 17.1.1

Note: I suspect this ussue has to do with iOS memory/energy management. Please look intot that point of view, i.e. load the iPad with more open apps, switch between them, and also put the iPad to sleep for a longer time, i.e. 30 mins. This may help you to reproduce in your labs.

Another Note: This issue occurs mainly when I am using Roon Remote, and also have this forum website open, which has active connection and is constantly refreshing. Often, I will not even put the ipad to sleep, but switch between this forum (opened in Safari) and Roon Remote - and when I switch from Safari to Roon Remote, it will be broken and stale.
