When I switch on my Cocktail Audio X50D and start playing music the volume is extremely loud irrespective of the volume set at the device. This problem does not occur, when I connect via Airplay (of course also with Roon)
Describe your network setup
The Roon Core is on an NAS (the problem was the same when i operated the core on an iMac), the client device is a Cocktail Audio X50D which is connected vi a LAN and the loudspeakers are Beolab 50s from Bang & Olufsen.
There should be more advanced settings. Please try to scroll/swipe/drag the content to see the additional options below “Max bits per sample (PCM)”.
Also the volume in Roon is set to 0 (zero). Depending on the device this can mean maximum volume. Given the nature of your issue, please consider setting volume limits in Roon:
This device is a digital streamer it has no amplifier for Roon to control. You’re also using a digital out which is normally a fixed level output to go to another DAC.
All Airplay devices have to have a digital volume control in the signal path to get Airplay certification, Roon does not. Any volume it adjusts audio is in the digital domain and likely they are not offering this path up for Roon integration as it’s deemed better to not to. Other devices generally offer this up as a setting. There has been some instance recently though of some Roon devices that previously had volume control that had stopped working since last update, but this has been limited to Cambridge Audio devices. Has it ever been able to adjust volume via RAAT?
