Volume settings on Mac Mini

I’m struggling to determine what Volume settings to use on a Mac Mini working as a dedicated server (exclusive mode). I have the Mac directly connected to the DAC over USB (yes, I know…) (no HQP) and perform upsampling (PCM), nothing more.

  • Should I use Fixed/Device/DSP?
  • Or is headroom the place where to control volume?
  • And what about the volume adjustment under Zones?
  • How to determine the volume level anyway? Thanks!

Signal path currently:

Anyone willing to share some insights on this plz?

I also have a headless Mac Mini. In my set up I have fixed volume set for my Naim Uniti Atom HE as I believe that is optimum setting for SQ. On other devices, for less critical listening, I have ‘Device volume’ set for greater convenience. I don’t use DSP except for headphone use.

Thanks @Dipper. But with Fixed, don’t you get volume differences between tracks/albums? Does ROON analyzes each track before playing?

Only if you setup On Demand analysis. Otherwise, Roon goes through in the beginning and analyzes the entire library for Volume Leveling and Playback Waveform creation. I personally choose to do it On Demand prior to playback, as it only every does it once anyway. Why waste all the processing time on tracks I might not listen to for years?

However, I only allow fixed volume playback and use the volume control of the amp. Can there be volume differences between albums, of course, and that is fine, and preferable to me. Since, volume leveling is not a concern of mine, pre-processing my library is even less of concern.

Thanks, this makes it clear. I too use the amp volume but I mostly stream when listening to digital music. I’m happy with the settings I use now but now I at least know how it works, thanks for clarifying!
