What a disappointment (no Linux client, no music recommendations without streaming service)

So I finally jumped into the Roon wagon, but not for long, as there is no Linux client. Guys, we are in 2024, Windows has become a cesspool, and no, no Apple stuff in my house.
And honestly, it’s far too pricey for a “local library management app”. No new music recommendations without Tidal or Qobuz. So if I need a subscription to any of these too to discover new music, I do not need to pay for anything else, thank you.
So between the promise and the result, I ended up very disappointed.

What were your expectations, apart from Linux client and a lower price? What major functionalities does it lack?

The main feature I was hoping for was recommendations. For new artists of course, but more importantly, for new albums. I know what I already have, thank you, the information I lack is which albums I’m missing in conjunction with recommendations. With Roon I still need to rely on my usual sources of information. I wish I could with a click go to Bandcamp, HDTracks or 7digital to fetch new material.
The price is not an issue if the features are here, and the lack of Linux support is a big miss. So I used the Android app, to discover I can’t setup an equalizer within the mobile app, you need to set it on the desktop app. Sooo convenient when you are on the move.
I mean… Roon is ok-ish, I do not see the point of paying that much for so little improvement to my usage.

I’d like a Linux client too, or a browser-based interface so that one can use roon regardless of which OS they run.

Making a Linux client would be a lot of work I bet simply due to the many different distro’s. Ubuntu would probably make the best sense, but then there are people like me who use Arch which would mean a different way to compile a Linux app.

A browser-based client would probably be the least cumbersome way to go to satisfy Linux users. But then again, I am not a programmer, so I may be wrong on what would be more work to make this happen.

Yes, indeed, in Roon the function of recommending new albums is almost useless, even with the use of streaming services.

I canceled before even linking a Qobuz account. You saved me some time.
So you mean that even with a streaming account Roon doesn’t display the newest albums of one artist ? What’s the whole point of this app then? Provide wikipedia links? Honestly I’m puzzled by it’s popularity among music enthusiasts. What did I missed trying it out?

Spotify have a Linux client, and for the same price you get the music itself.

There is solutions like AppImage ar Flatpak. The problem of distros fragmentation is no more relevant in 2024.

Checkout roon extensions. I believe there is a browser client and a linux client is in development.

But you can’t use Focus or other advanced features with api based remotes at all. It’s always limited so your throwing away a lot of functionality.

No it provides you with full discography provided by the streaming service as it would via their own apps. What he means is discovery algorithms, notifications of new albums etc.

Discovery with Roon requires a streaming service to get the benefits of their catalogue to play. You can still discover other music via the bios etc but links to them are not present where with a streaming provider it does so you can sample them.

I mean… Roon is ok-ish, I do not see the point of paying that much for so little improvement to my usage.

Horses for courses i guess, for me it has totally revolutionised the way that i interact with my music collection, and at a cost that is way below my expectations.

To be precise, you can’t do it on a phone. You can on a tablet (Android and iPad). There are many features not present on the phone interface.

Based on this quote, it seems you missed the vast majority of features

Do you have a link please, I might have missed it.

But if you use a stream service, what is the benefit to use Roon?

And I’m glad so many users are pleased with Roon.

I wished Roon would ease the discovery of new stuff, it won’t. To me it’s not much more than Mediamonkey, for what I have a lifetime license I do not use anymore because of the lack of Linux client.

Unfortunately, all the family consume music mainly through mobile phones. Being unable to set the EQ for headphones on the move is just useless.

Room management? I agree the lack of Linux client might have hindered my experience, but I’ve checked the Android app quite intensively, and I haven’t been stroke by a killer feature. Tell me what are yours.

It’s not useless for many people. You can choose presets. Why would anyone change EQ willy nilly on the move.

This (if you mean DSP) and about 20 others things. Focus. Multiroom. Credits with links. Listing performances of compositions. Useful ratings instead of binary choices. Tags. Bookmarks. Album versions. Distinction of release date and original release date with ability to sort by the latter.

I run this on Vanilla OS and it is just getting better and better with each release, well worth a try.

Yeah I agree that’s nice features. Not unheard off, but nice to have.

At first sight I thought it was an alpha release, I might need to reconsider it.

Obviously I did. Who is not aware of what is Roon. I just thought it was more “awesome”, something for the rich I might be able to afford one day.
Nevermind, I might try it again.

I’m not aware of any other music player that has something like Focus, for one

Ok, ok. You sold it. I paid to go deeper into it. Thank you for your time.
