What happens with the lifetime subscribers if the company folds or is sold?

Interesting, many years ago our local gym chain was going badly downhill , Virgin Active bought it out. The first thing they did was stop all lifetime membership, even people with lifetime were forced onto an subscription plan

Cash flow is King …

If Roon will closed (hopefully not). The best thing they can do for those have existing subscriptions specially those lifetime. They should (Roon) make the Roon ROCK run and function without internet and send that OS Package to the subscribers. And leave it installed on there devices such as NUC, PC, MAC or something like that to work or function in a local music files. If it will corrupt or has a bugs, we will reinstall the ROCK again back to factory default. Then working/functioning again.
Is it good suggestion or not?

I’m still VERY happy I “pulled the trigger”

I was often harsh towards roon (but they even implemented some of my feature requests, even when it was after years only :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: ) but after all, those 500$ were easily the best spent money in all my over 40 years as a hifi- and music nut :innocent:

Businesses tend to cease trading suddenly, I can’t speak for the US but as soon as something like that happens in the UK, the administrator oversees everything and sending software to people to allow them to use a company asset would need to be regulated. It sounds like you’re suggesting anyone with log in credentials gets to use Roon locally for ever? No one would regulate when someone’s entitlement ended.
If a company ceases trading, don’t expect anything.
I’ve not read the Roon lifetime contract, does it guarantee a certain length of service? Or is it a gamble, one where you are happy to have many years of service but unhappy if something like this happens?
You can’t have it both ways, the lure of the lifetime benefits is the gamble.

Plan for something else, putting all eggs into the basket of a commercial entity you have zero control over is not wise.
Have a backup library, LMS etc that allows you to listen to your music, integrate Qobuz etc.
Or Audirvana etc.

It was 699 Euro for me nearly 2 years ago. But definitely worth it after nearly 2 annual subscriptions. Roon lifetime was just slightly more expensive than my Cambridge CD transport. So yeah, for me Roon equalled the price of one piece of hifi equipment.

This is why I will not buy a Roon only music server. I’ll stick with my Mac mini m2 .

Well, they are standard Intel computers and you can load any OS you want that runs on Intel CPUs. I have loaded standard Linux and then Windows on a Nucleus, both work just fine.

4 posts were split to a new topic: How does the passive cooling work without the Nucleus tweak?

Roon is in a league of its own. I have always found it to be an exceptional product that continues to innovate and have invested an unfathomable amount of time into the software, tweaking my library and tuning my experience. Investing in lifetime was always a “when” not an “if”. I still consider it to be amongst the best money I have spent on software and contrary to some of the concerns raised here, in a world filled with subscription only software, purchasing lifetime put my mind at ease once and for all. I have not looked back since - and I have no plans to.

I am about to hit 4 years on lifetime (bought end of Nov 2020 prior to price increase), and ROCK has been running for four years with fairly minimal reboots / issues. Great investment. Very happy. If it goes away tomorrow I’ll figure my life out. Have Plex running in the background because I use PlexAmp for “radio-like” functionality, so I wouldn’t be toast. But I sure love it, so sure do hope this is a non-isssue with Harman now…

I started this thread a little over 9 years ago and was just “awarded” my 9th anniversary :innocent:

That must have felt like a lifetime pun intended ago

Same here. I was an early subscriber to Plex and an early subscriber to Roon. Talking about value for money,

Im now using roon for a year and a half or so, very happy with everything, i now have a year subscription which end somewhere in december, havent checked all the topics about roon and harman, can i still buy a lifetime subscription or am i better off with a year?

You still can. Whether you are financially better off with it depends on the unknown future.

Personally, the lifetime subscription means that I never think about whether Roon is worth it and there isn’t a slight financial sting every year. This is worth more to me than the cost is. Only you can decide for yourself.

I’ve started with Roon in May of 2021. And went with an annual subscription. After getting another one a year later I’d decided that halfway through it to go lifetime late 2022. This was because Roon announced to increase the costs of everything.

Was it expensive to do? Certainly. But for me it was totally worth it as I am using Roon on a daily basis, both at home and through Roon ARC at work. And like Suedkiez already mentioned. No more added costs in the future.

If it may be worthwhile for you to go lifetime? That’s a question that only you can answer.

Roon is like a audio device (turntable , dac whatever) that I wouldn’t want to miss in my setup. So lifetime subscription as well . Even if roon folds in another couple of years … definitely worth the experience. And all the other stuff just doesn’t get close enough to be a alternative… roon is like a iPhone pro to me and the next best thing is a android potato from 2012

If you are questioning it maybe dont do it?

That post was October 2015. I suspect he’s decided by now, over 9 years later.
