What has happened to Roon Radio now?

I have found what you stated absolutely true. After the flawless ten ours of play, I paused it. Today, I let Roon Radio keep going and it hasn’t disappointed me. Roon Radio would normally shutdown and tell me to go find something to play. Hopefully this isn’t a fluke.

one of these is not like the others.

i understand why this happens, the album in question is tagged as both Jazz and Holiday, but surely Radio is smart enough to include a flag for Christmas/Holiday that prevents its inclusion before, sat December 1st.

Oh my, roon has totally lost it at this stage, never mind new announcements about live music how about fixing this so called AI?

Played some Gilmour today, it was followed up with the usual dross roon puts out guaranteed every single time, ‘Don’t Give Up’ Peter Gabrial, something by Eric Clapton etc, then it went to Chappel Roan, Pink Pony Club and then Spiders by Lola Young!

Work that one out. I am all for new music but how about throwing some modern prog rock at me, jees.

I know I’m adding to a vintage post but it’s on topic!
I have been using Roon Radio a lot more recently while working on stuff. I’ve realised that I have no idea how it is supposed to work. There does not seem any consistency in what it chooses. I started earlier today by playing ‘Summon’ by LN. LN describe themselves as Viking Goth Metal. Roon Radio just played ‘Into the Sky Uplifting’ by Norlander on the Trance Box album, then ‘Adriano in Siria: Manicure o Dis mi sento’, which is Opera sung by Cecilia Bartoli. This was followed by ‘Links 2 3 4’ by Rammstein - heavy metal!

Having read the article FAQ: What’s Radio and how does it work? I can’t see why it would progress from Trance to Opera to Heavy Metal. All I can think of is that it is picking up on tracks that other people with similar tastes like whatever the genre, rather than choosing tracks within the same genre.

Yes, I could probably put some significant effort into trying to train the thing into what I think should be in the playlist and what shouldn’t. But that will require significant time. Which detracts from the work I’m supposed to be doing.

Is there any easy way to persuade the AI to just play similar tracks from the same genre?

I have long given up, though there are other options and Roon has other purposes.

came here today after spending a some time just browsing, reading articles while listening to roon radio and realizing that has now picked 18 songs in a row from my local library. is this a new feature? Until I just realized this now, Roon would typically choose more files from my streaming service (Qobuz) even if I had a track in my local library.

I welcome this change as I go out of my way to curate my local library but just curious to see if this is a new undocumented change. 19 songs now.

I actually think there is something different now and wrong with Roon Radio. I hadn’t used it in a while, but when using it more frequently a couple years ago it did alright. Here’s what just happened:

Started by Play(ing) Now - 7 Seconds, Young Til I Die (It’s Friday night…I want to wake up)

Radio suggests and Plays GG Allin - not my cup of tea, skip

Radio plays New Bomb Turks and Crucif***s (uck) - OK

Roon suggests another GG Allin song - really

Roon Radio plays a Government Issue song and a Youth Brigade song - OK

Roon suggests yet another GG Allin song - come on man!

Roon plays a Reagan Youth song - OK

Roon suggests another Youth Brigade Song - OK but really right after another one 2 songs ago?

Roon suggests yet another GG Allin song! OK Roon Radio, you’re unlistenable! (This literally happened while I was typing the above).

I’m not expecting Roon to read my mind, but this reads like HAL with half the chips out. What’s up with 4 GG Allin songs in 10 minutes and another band repeat? @Roon, there is something going on - you want to look at this.

(I’m sure someone likes GG Allin)

i just played a playlist, the last song of which was Eva Cassidy’s Fields of Gold from Live from Blues Alley.

Roon Radio’s first selection?

Eva Cassidy, Fields of Gold from Songbird.

pretty sure it’s the same track (Songbird was posthumously released).

pathetic.

Another cool update from Roon today, but still no fix for Roon Radio. Makes me sad. I mainly bought Roon because of the Radio feature that is broken since they integrated streaming services.

By Roon Radio you mean the follow on of like music when your chosen album ends ?

Do you mean not working or presenting inappropriate content ?

Have you got switched on on the Queue View

Do you use the Thumbs up / down to Train The Dragon ?

its just gone from Suzanne Vega to Tori Amos to Suzanne Vega to Tracy Chapman - seems OK on both counts

What needs fixing ? Have you raised a support ticket ?

This topic is going on since streaming services were integrated. There are lots of threads here about it. What does not work anymore is that RoonRadio is (1) not choosing the next songs randomly, but uses the first song as a seed, so if the first song is identical, you will always get the same songs and (2) is not varying the songs enough, so you will mainly listen to the same songs over and over again instead of having some new songs from the streaming services brought into the mix. We are waiting for years now to see this fixed, but nobody from Roon really cares.

The whole idea is that Roon Radio carries on with music in the same style as what you were listening to . It was never claimed to be random.

What you see is the design , a seed track or the last played track the Thumb up/down is to train the select algorithm as to your specific likes and dislikes

@Mike_O_Neill , from what I’ve read in the Community, that isn’t quite correct. The thumb up/down trains the algorithm to a cross section of many likes/dislikes, and is not unique to each subscriber.

I noticed a change with the Start radio option. I’ve always been quite satisfied with the direction of the music after I trigger it with a track I choose. But it seems recently, the song selection is quite limited. It will pick like 3 related artists, and just keep playing tracks from those artists over and over.
And interestingly, I notice those same few artists in the rotation, even when I trigger from a similar but different album.

Anyone else notice this?

Note: I usually start Radio from one of my owned tracks, and I have Tidal

Yes, it’s the same for me. Depending on the seed track, it can be better or worse, but a couple of tracks always come up sooner or later no matter what track I started with.

Try the new version and report if it’s better now

The latest update to 2.7 finally starts to address the problem. The Roon team created a feedback thread to capture if the situation improved and what may still be bad:
