What is the best way to transfer iTunes library on a Mac mini to Roon Nucleus one?

Hello all,
I am looking for best option to transfer library from a Mac mini iTunes to the Nucleus 1. I have worked out all other bugs so time to fill the n1. Any options to update audio quality when transferring or just transfer basic then upgrade. Best options and best connections appreciated. Thank you, Chris Peterson

I found this.

Didn’t try it myself though.

Thats just playlists. OP likely wants to move the music files themselves. Nothing special needed. Just copy the music files from where they are now to the Nucleus, either its internal music storage drive if you added that or an attached USB drive.

And no, copying/moving files cannot improve sound quality of the files. Converting mp3, m4a, or ripped lossless CD files to highres does nothing but make the file size larger.

Hello Joost and Garym,
Thank you for the help. I will give it a try later. I will let you know how it goes. Chris Peterson

Hello Garym,
So talking about transferring from iTunes to N1 do I highlight and do what from their to make sure all music is sent from which folders in iTunes to N1 correct file or library. Play by play please. Do not want to send to the wrong folder. Thank you sir,
Chris Peterson

I dont have a Nucleus, so someone else will need to provide the play by play. But you should tell us more details.

  1. Where is your itunes music files stored?
  2. Where will you store music files for the Nucleus? An attached USB HDD or an internal HDD or SSD.

Either way, assuming your music library is something like

C:/music/artist/album/tracks….

Then you click on the top directory, music, select COPY, then on the destination drive, say D:/ you simply PASTE. The folder and subfolder structure should remain. You are simply copying files the way you would normally do this on your computer. The fact that they are audio files doesnt change anything.

Hello Garym,
I have my music on my Mac mini on iTunes. My Nucleus One has a 4tb ssd drive internal drive. I have around 25,000 songs should be enough room to grow my library as well with the 4tb drive. Thank you for your help,
Chris Peterson

Should be an easy copy and paste of your files. Someone with a nucleus should be able to give you more specifics.

By the way, iTunes has nothing to do with this. ITunes is simply pointing to the actual music files on your Mac.

Hello Garym and others,
Sorry I have not been here much. Been sick and trying to get back to feeling motivated to get last 2 things done with Roon and dsd playback. Will let you know if I get the music files transferred successfully and move onto the dsd playback. Hope all is well with everyone. Appreciate all your help, Chris Peterson

Hello all,
So I have tried everything listed for transferring my Apple Music library to my Nucleus one and nothing is working as what I have read and interpreted. I have a much newer OSX so that might be creating an issue but Finder does not do any of the things that it says it should be able to do per previous community articles or other info pages. I have went through all the Mac mini settings and changed the sharing settings and entered the user and all other info per Roon articles and nothing seems to work. Could it be that the Mac mini update changed all the previous ways to share and use finder because nothing is the same on the Mac mini OSX that I see. Anyone have a newer Mac mini and a Nucleus 1 that has figured out how to transfer or share music between devices. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you again, Chris Peterson

Here’s a guide to copy files into N1’s internal storage.

Hello Jin,
So I connected the N1 and it shows up in the internal storage but I think there is an update or maybe song update inside Apple Music slowing down anything from being able to transfer any music. I have a cloud showing up next to every song and everything is showing up red. Not sure how to update and make library current with new Apple Music versus iTunes which I used to somewhat know how to transfer from device to device in the past. Anyone that can help would be much appreciated. Thank you, Chris Peterson

In my media folder, I don’t find anything with cloud icon or red mark. Would you please take a snapshot of the folder you would like to copy to N1?

For example, here’s my media folder screenshot (edited: typo, not snapshot, should be screenshot):

If there is a cloud icon next to your file names, I would guess that means that this music is not actually on your drive, but is stored in the cloud by Apple. You likely need a LOCAL copy of these files, not the cloud version. I don’t use Apple Music, so not sure how one downloads these files to a local drive (and not sure whether these files are even allowed to be used outside the Apple ecosystem). Do you have copies of the files OUTSIDE of Apple Music?

Hello all,
Anyone use Apple Music and knows how to transfer songs to N1? I have set up the folder on N1 and switched on every setting on the Mac Mini and nothing is showing up between the 2 devices. I know I am missing a setting or path but not sure what needs to be changed. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank again, Chris Peterson

Hello Garym,
I switched off Sync Library and cloud is gone but music still shows up red. Playing with settings to change how music is showing up. Maybe I need to transfer from certain folder not from Apple Music screen. Trying to locate music folder which I thought was put in library.xml folder but everything changed since changing settings. I understand nothing is easy with migrating music from one device to another but always a setting away from getting everything working together.Thank you for your help, Chris Peterson

If you have ripped some CD’s, or bought some albums or tracks in iTunes, the downloaded local files are located in the folder defined in the “Settings…” of your Music app:

Locate the folder, then you will find all the files are under it.

Apple Music is a stream service. You will not be able to copy files from a stream service.

Hello Jin,
So all my albums are on the Nucleus N1 in a cache but not on a drive so is there a way to download them or best to keep in a cache and just start loading music on the hard drive then. There has to be a way to transfer the music from my Mac mini Apple Music that used to be iTunes and I have moved it around many times before unless Apple changed everything which would not surprise me. I also have the music on my phone under Apple Music but all music is downloaded. Thank you for your help, Chris Peterson

do you own this music? or just stuff you downloaded from apple within your Apple Music subscription? sorry if you already confirmed this
