What is the latest concert you've been to? [2020-202*]

I saw David Ramirez on 1/31/25 at The Rumba Café in Columbus Ohio. 3rd time seeing him there since 2015 or 2016.

Excellent, very small club. I got to see Geoff Tate there in 2017. Absolutley magical!!!

Yesterday I returned from a 4-day trip to Germany with some long time friends. We saw Manowar two days in a row in Bamberg and Munich. Both shows of their running “Blood Of My Enemies 2025 Tour” were sold out. Founding members Eric Adams and Joey DeMaio hired guitar madman Michael Angelo Batio to join the tour.

In Bamberg the band played a “Best Of” Set and their legendary “Hail To England” album in its entirety.

In Munich the band played a “Best Of” Set and the “Sign Of The Hammer” album in its entirety.

I am now starting my week of recovery after this exhausting but wonderful trip.

Saw Opeth yesterday evening in Amsterdam. My first time. Love their progressive work, having minor issues with his growling era. And the new album has a lot of that…

Anyways… literally blown away. What an incredible skilled band (the new drummer… djeez… how old is he?). The sound / audio part was up there with the best I’ve heard live in a long time.

Can’t help thinking that this band needs a bigger audience.

This was the last song of the evening.

I was able to grab a last minute ticket for the Queensrÿche gig in Vienna yesterday. The band is currently touring in UK and Europe as part of their “Origins Tour” and played “Queensryche EP” and “The Warning” album in its entirety.

The gig was moved to a smaller venue than originally planned. The place was completely packed and some people didn’t even fit in the main room… this really sucks and and is something which needs to be sorted out by the promoters…

An enjoyable evening last night listening to Robin Trower perform live in Chattanooga Tennessee. He’ll be 80 come March 9th, but he’s still a maestro of the guitar…

No one’s posted a video from this particular concert. But here’s one from his concert at @AceRimmer 's favorite venue a few nights earlier…

He played all the oldie but goodies. But nothing from his upcoming release in April. Looking forward to this…

Went to see Heart in Sacramento last night. Opening act was Squeeze. Great show! Ann Wilson was in a wheelchair due to a broken elbow that had to be supported on a pillow. All healthy otherwise and her voice is in great form.

I saw Green Lung, Unto Others and Satan’s Satyrs yesterday at Flex in Vienna. The bands have been touring across Europe for almost a month (Heathen Neverland Tour 2025). The venue was pretty packed but not sold out.

Satan’s Satyrs kicked things off with their high-energy mix of heavy psych/garage-rock with some punk and doom elements added.

Unto Others were up next and they caught my attention after the first few notes. A very entertaining and well executed mix of heavy metal and goth-rock.

Green Lung are a force on their own and they blew everyone away. Their mix of classic hard-rock/heavy metal and stoner/doom works tremendously well. I like their albums a lot but seeing them live is a totally different experience.

I could not get tickets to see them in Bristol, but I imagine it would have been a great evening with some fantastic music

I would include a photo, but if you have seen her live, well you can’t actually see her. It was her covers on Bob Dylan, and despite some very awkward times, her voice and delivery was stunning.

The music

ZappaThe Dog Breath Variations/Uncle Meat; Outrage at Valdez; G-Spot Tornado (15’) Listen

  • Dinuk Wijeratne Clarinet Concerto (European premiere) (27’)

MartinůSymphony No. 6 (Fantaisies symphoniques) (25’) Listen

The performers

  • Kevin John Edusei conductor
  • Kinan Azmeh clarinet

Kevin John Edusei presents Zappa, Martinů and a new clarinet concerto with phenomenal Syrian clarinettist Kinan Azmeh.

Frank Zappa wove psychedelic new sounds from the underbelly of 1960s pop culture – aiming straight for the sonic G-spot. Bohuslav Martinů – a Czech in exile – looked homeward, and crafted a lush, fantastic dream of a symphony as he travelled from New York to the boulevards of Paris. And the Sri Lankan-born Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne tells his own intensely personal tale of displacement and hope, as Kevin John Edusei conducts his new Clarinet Concerto with the artist for whom it was created – the phenomenal Syrian clarinettist Kinan Azmeh.

So great to see Frank’s music is being played in venues like that. Wish I could go.

Together with some friends I spent the majority of the last week in Germany to say goodbye to the Oysterband, my all time favourite Celtic-/Folk-Rock band. The band decided to hang up their travelling shoes and announced a “Long Long Goodbye Tour” last year.

We saw the band in Hamburg (Knust)

Berlin (Frannz Club)

and Hannover (Pavillon)

The band was absolutely amazing, the venues packed and the crowds simply fantastic. We enjoyed both the music and the trip itself. Tons of beer and junkfood, good laughs and nice chats with fans from all around Europe… a wonderful way to celebrate the last 30 years of being a fanboy.

I’m not familiar with them, but it sounds interesting. Can you recommend a particular album to try?

The quality gigs keep on coming. Kelly Lee Owens at Marble Factory yesterday evening.
