Cat Power
I would include a photo, but if you have seen her live, well you can’t actually see her. It was her covers on Bob Dylan, and despite some very awkward times, her voice and delivery was stunning.

Kevin John Edusei presents Zappa, Martinů and a new clarinet concerto with phenomenal Syrian clarinettist Kinan Azmeh.
Frank Zappa wove psychedelic new sounds from the underbelly of 1960s pop culture – aiming straight for the sonic G-spot. Bohuslav Martinů – a Czech in exile – looked homeward, and crafted a lush, fantastic dream of a symphony as he travelled from New York to the boulevards of Paris. And the Sri Lankan-born Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne tells his own intensely personal tale of displacement and hope, as Kevin John Edusei conducts his new Clarinet Concerto with the artist for whom it was created – the phenomenal Syrian clarinettist Kinan Azmeh.
So great to see Frank’s music is being played in venues like that. Wish I could go.
Together with some friends I spent the majority of the last week in Germany to say goodbye to the Oysterband, my all time favourite Celtic-/Folk-Rock band. The band decided to hang up their travelling shoes and announced a “Long Long Goodbye Tour” last year.
We saw the band in Hamburg (Knust)
Berlin (Frannz Club)
and Hannover (Pavillon)
The band was absolutely amazing, the venues packed and the crowds simply fantastic. We enjoyed both the music and the trip itself. Tons of beer and junkfood, good laughs and nice chats with fans from all around Europe… a wonderful way to celebrate the last 30 years of being a fanboy.
I’m not familiar with them, but it sounds interesting. Can you recommend a particular album to try?
A terrific Band - one that I have seen, and enjoyed, on a number of times at the Sidmouth Folk Festival here in the UK.
The album “Holy Bandits” or the compilation “Trawler” represent their mid-90s sound very well (which probably was their most successful period). In addition you might want to listen to “Meet You There” (2007).
Thanks. I added them to Listen Later.
The orchestra were swaying and smiling to the Frank Zappa pieces.
The clarinet piece was interesting though I’m always puzzled how the journey in the composers head as related in the review below is supposed to be communicated to the audience.
