Yesterday I saw Australian thrashers Harlott at Escape, Vienna (Local support: Raging Void and Atömic Seasön).

Raging Void kicked things off with their nice mix of thrash/death metal.

Atömic Seasön were up next… I really like their old-school thrash approach…

Harlott are currently touring in Europe and are celebrating their 20th anniversary and the release of their 5th album. Very nice guys and a great set of songs.

Went to see Metric last night in Utrecht. Not that many great pictures as I was in the back.

I’ve discovered this band recently (never too old to discover new music  ), and this was the first time I saw them live. Somehow I had this prejudice that this is more of a studio band than a live band, but that was clearly wrong.

Very tight set, amazing band.

Thursday night I went to see W.A.S.P and K.Ks Priest, it went a little different to my expectations.
K.K were support and having heard their debut album I was not expecting too much, just metal by numbers.
However live experience was totally different, here is where they scored heavily.
Great crowd interaction, even though frontman was a Halford wannabe he did work the audience very well.
Superb sound, the mixing desk did a great job.
Excellent song selection, along with their own songs they obviously pulled heavily from the Priest catalogue and the crowd loved it.
Above all else they really looked like they were having a blast up there and just enjoying themselves and that carried over to the crowd.

W.A.S.P, well I guess I set my expectations to high, after all they were never really a strong musical band, more the shock and spectacle of their live acts and there was nothing of the old shows here at all.
Poor crowd interaction, Blackie maybe said 20 words to the crowd all night.
Volume was increased I guess to try and prove they were the headliners and the sound in this older Theater suffered for it.
Very odd choice of songs, their Heep cover of Easy Livin’ was probably a standout!
And they looked bored and just going through the motions and this also carried over to the crowd, a lot of people were leaving before the end.

Still a good night just not what I expected.

Talking of Raven, I picked this album up on vinyl last week rescued from a dollar bin!
But imagine getting away with an album cover like that now!

Yesterday I saw Danish bands BAEST and Deadnate at Escape, Vienna.

Deadnate started the evening with a mix of progressive- and death metal.

BAEST started their set on time a 9:30pm. It was my first time seeing the guys live. They put on a great show and got the crowd going from the very first moment on. Awesome live act IMHO.

Yesterday I went to Vienna Metal Meeting @ Arena. The event was sold out. This year the promoter decided to use only the two indoor areas. Overlapping timeslots made it impossible to see all of the 11 bands.

First band I saw was Austrian act Graufar

Next up was Dödsrit

Sulphur Aeon

I switched stages and saw Izegrim in the smaller area. Awesome set and an unexpected highlight for me.

Quickly grabbed something to eat, had a chat with some friends and rushed off to catch Benediction back in the large hall. As vocalist Dave Ingram had to quit touring due to health issues earlier this year, Dave Hunt took over vocal duties for this gig. Great setlist, awesome crowd but unfortunately terrible sound (at least where I was standing)

After a short break everyone was waiting for Satyricon to appear. They played a great set focusing on their late 90s/2000s stuff. Sound was way better this time.

Last Saturday at the Tonhalle in Zurich. An interesting program with Anne-Sophie Mutter playing Beethoven violin concert No. 2. Her performance was stellar. Interesting was also Astor Piazolla’s Tangazo (Variations on Buenos Aires) and Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 2 (The Four Temperaments). The orchestra of the Zurich Opera House was conducted by Lina González-Granados, a woman leading this fine orchestra with lots of verve. It was a fine evening.
