Benny Greb! A solo that really grooves!
Bryan Devendorf from The National. Their distinctive, propulsive sound is almost entirely down to him.

High Violet is a great example, but pretty much all the albums have his mark on them.
Think we need a video of the last one William!
Don’t tell me, he’s 28!
Roy Haynes, because of his amazing sense of accent and groove/swing. Saw him last year in his 90s and he still has the snap crackle pop!
I’m really into Tyshawn Sorey at the moment. Very innovative use of space. Rhythm is about what you don’t play as much as what you do.
If you have a good drummer, everything works. If you don’t nothing works.
Nobody got any female drummers on their top list?
I love Terri Lyne Carrington. She has amazing drive and creativity.
A few more. Jaki Liebezeit of Can. Perfect metronomic timing and incredible forward motion. Ziggy Modeliste of the Meters and Clyde Stubblefield of Funky Drummer fame. Tony Allen from Fela’s band.
All of them have in common that they could play a simple beat for hours and you would never get bored because of the depth of the groove.
Yes, they’re inclined to combust spontaneously.
I’ve been following along on this thread, and most of my favorites have already been cited, but I haven’t seen anyone mention Joey Baron. He’s a technical master, IMO, and a lot of other musicians I admire really like to use him. Some examples…

For those who love Simon Phillipps…
No one has mentioned British Folk Rock drummers. My all-time fave is Dave Mattacks who invented a style for backing jigs and reels with Fairport Convention. Here a a couple of examples:

Hi @Jonathan_Dibble1,
very impressive video. Thanks a lot. Have you watched the Simon Phillips clip yet?
Thanks! Just watched it this morning, superb! What a masterful display of dynamics, independence and musicality. All played open handed, what skill.
Such a nice kit she’s playing. Why let the base drum sound like a rubber pad?
Happy New Year everyone!
Check out “The Source”, Tony Allen’s latest album as a leader. Allen is a very musical and extremely versatile drummer (Funk, Latin, Rock, Swing…)!
Yes - I agree it does not sound very punchy… However I think she is a young musician and this was one of her first releases. If you check out some of her more recent work on You Tube the production is far superior…
This one for example
