Been following this piano player and she does covers of modern songs with a drummer and sometimes other guests.

Listen to albums by The Bad Plus, particularly their original piano jazz trio. Their drummer David King is an improv pioneer and a true standout. I also recommend listening to Japanese artists like Hiromi Uehara, Chihiro Yamanaka, Yoshiko Kishino, and Ai Kuwabara - Hiromi is the superstar of the bunch but they have all released excellent contemporary jazz / jazz fusion material.
